What not to expect of Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1

Upgrading from 8.04 to 8.04.1

“What?! That sucks!” Yeah, I know, but no one have taken the time to make debs of the changes implemented into 8.04.1, which means the edits are hard coded into the iso and you won’t be able to upgrade. You will have to do a fresh install.

When will it be released

As soon as Adams new kernel is ready, Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 goes gold. It is ready within a couple of days.

Hi Jon,

Great distro, marvellous work! I have an eeePC 1000H and am having problems with the touchpad. Is there anyway to disable ‘tap-to-click’? I’m new to Linux and it’s infuriating constantly clicking when I don’t mean to!

Comment by Garry — September 15, 2008 @ 8:11 am

Thomas, I don’t mind at all!

Charles, in short: yes :)

Anonymous, I haven’t seen any tests yet, but I’ll be sure to post them when people start benchmarking

Comment by Jon Ramvi — September 6, 2008 @ 9:27 pm

Is it everything working in the 901 Charles, any issue to be commented with that config ?

What about boot time ?

Thanks

For someone already running Ubuntu EEE 8.04 with adamm’s custom kernel, (and it’s fully tweaked), will the 8.04.1 installation provide any more functionality or compatibility with a model 901?

Comment by Charles — August 24, 2008 @ 1:22 am

[...] to Ubuntu to turn it into Ubuntu Eee. Not many changes were applied in this first release (but the 8.04.1 release is awesome) and it’s sad if we go around fooling people. 27% thougth we had made many changes. [...]

Feel free to digg, everyone. Help spread the word, about this (hopefully) fabulous release! ;)

Gerrt, yes, Ubuntu Eee will be available in the same languages as Ubuntu – and that’s a whole lot. Heia Norge!

Patrick, Nalle Berg, you can follow the development of Ubuntu Eee live here:

Comment by Jon Ramvi — August 22, 2008 @ 2:41 pm

I think a fonctionnality to crypt the data on the eee would be great, because we can loose this micro PC, and somebody can still it, so it can protect our critical data…

“So Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 is released in about 72 hours.”
Comment by Jon Ramvi — August 19, 2008 @ 11:45 am

According to that statement it should come today? Can anyone confirm that? I’d love to use this weekend to install it on my, my daughters (2 of them) and
my friends – we all got 900’s.

Having four installs to do, it is nice that it comes on a Friday! I refer to my earlier post and do not want to rush anything – I’d just like to know.

Does anyone know if the RC of Ubuntu EEE 8.04.1 has been released yet or where to download it?

Comment by Patrick — August 21, 2008 @ 11:56 pm

Hi, thanks for the good work;-)
I’ve got a weird question: Will the 8.04.1 be available in norsk/nynorsk? Heia Norge!

Comment by Gerrt — August 21, 2008 @ 7:41 pm

That’s right Edward, however before UNR was installed boot took near 45 scs to GDM.

Now, no-GDM login, around 1.10 to see gnome loaded, plus another 10-15 scs to complete UNR.

Adam tested this new kernel to be in the order of 20-23 scs (using a 900 I guess). Let’s wait and see …

Comment by Javier — August 21, 2008 @ 12:28 am

Javier: correct me if I’m wrong, but that may have something to do with installing Netbook Remix on a 701.

Comment by Edward — August 20, 2008 @ 11:50 pm

Thank u Jon, but could not wait.
Installed stock 8.4.01 + Adam’s new k + Ricey + all tweaks (hpet, no quiet boot, etc) + UNR on my 701 4g. Everything works fine, however boot time (Button pressed to UNR operational) still close to 85 seconds, just fyi.

all the best

Eagerly awaiting 8.04.1

My mate has the 900 so I have a victim to test it on… :)

Comment by Gaspard Leon — August 20, 2008 @ 12:18 am

thanks a lot for all the efforts that have gone to build this excellent product; i am running my new eeepc 901 and very happy with it. All the best with the new release.

looking fwd for the new release.. only worry is that i can’t upgrade and have to do fresh install on a fully setup system :(

Also i have noted that some times when you access blue tooth the system hangs up.. just wanted to let you know. thanks again..

Comment by Akshathkumar Shetty — August 19, 2008 @ 6:52 pm

Hmm. Strange. Your feeds is working now. I just wanted to let you know so that you don’t spend time working on it …

Comment by Asle Ommundsen — August 19, 2008 @ 3:10 pm

Asle Ommundsen, thanks for the heads up! Will fix it as soon as 8.04.1 is out of the way.

tom.higgy, as it isn’t ready and as I don’t have an atom; I don’t know yet. We will benchmark it when it’s done :)

Kip Ingram, thanks and thanks for seeding!

Javier, Edward, Michael, I got a lot of work yesterday. The last problem is getting applications into the Netbook Remix favorites menu through terminal. If someone knows how, please share :) When that’s done, I’ll make an iso for myself – see if it’s working. If I’m happy about it, I’ll make a RC. If there’s no complains the first 24 hours, the same iso goes gold! So Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 is released in about 72 hours. I’m sorry about the late replies, but the time I’ve used by the computer have only been making-Ubuntu Eee-time.

Denis, the 900 is supported. You can be the one to check if the 900D is supported :) Thanks!

Comment by Michael — August 18, 2008 @ 10:07 pm

the excitement is mounting! i’ve had my eee 901 a week now and i’m looking forward to ditching Xandros for 8.04.1. i’m trying to be patient, i really am!

I’m using ubuntu eee 8.04 on my 700, but I’m planning on buying a 900D, is 8.04.1 gonna work on these?

Comment by Denis — August 18, 2008 @ 2:47 pm

I’d like to add my words of thanks to those below for all your hard work so far. My eeepc 901 should be arriving tomorrow, and I look forward to throwing the new ubuntu-eee 8.04.1 on it as soon as possible. Any updates as to when we may expect it? (a popular question, it seems :) )

Comment by Edward — August 17, 2008 @ 7:59 pm

Thank you both Jon and Adam for the time and work to bring the best of Ubuntu to our little eee’s.

Now, I dont want to put preassure on u Jon but when do u expect to throw 8.04.1 ?

Some of us need to make decisions based on ur timescales …

Kind regards from the sunny Spain

Comment by Javier — August 16, 2008 @ 1:07 pm

Which machine do you have? 8.04 was only designed for the 701 – there are fixes for the 901/1000. 8.04.1 should sort any issues. I hope… =8)

Comment by Peter — August 16, 2008 @ 11:14 am

Dissapointed.

I was hoping that an Ubuntu distro that was specific to the eee would actually have wireless working “out of the box”

Imagine my frustration when the OS could not only not find the wireless card, but it can’t find the ethernet card either.

An eee specific distro should have networking running ‘out of the box’

Back to square one

Thanks for working so hard to improve Ubuntu for the EEE PC. Looking forward to 8.04.1 since I can’t install 8.04 yet on my 2GB surf. Can’t wait! :)

Comment by Patrick Carroll — August 16, 2008 @ 1:10 am

Great work going on here jon and adam. Eagerly waiting for the new version.

Comment by soapy — August 15, 2008 @ 10:51 pm

Wow; I’m positively hanging on the edge of my seat over this. I just bought a 1000. I did ok with Xandros until I tried to make a Sprint PCS broadband card work. Installed Ubuntu Eee and it worked right away.

But there are the other issue that you all know about. 8.04 is working well enough for me to cobble along with, but I really look forward to right and proper support for this amazing little computer.

Thanks for all the hard work! I expect that torrent ratio you mentioned will flip upside down as soon as you release. I’ll seed it and leave it seeded.

Comment by Kip Ingram — August 15, 2008 @ 9:31 pm

Awsum news on the 901 fixes!

Looks like there’s a shortage of stock which means I’ve another week of waiting. It’ll make it all the better!

How’s the boot time on the atom?

Comment by tom.higgy — August 15, 2008 @ 12:24 pm

Thank you! I will wait! :-)

(PS! Your RSS and Atom feeds don’t work for me (i am using the Opera browsers built in feed reader). Also it gives errors displayed in the browser: «XML parsing failed: syntax error (Line: 0, Character: 0) – Error:unexpected end-of-file – Specification:http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/»)

Comment by Asle Ommundsen — August 15, 2008 @ 12:03 pm

Wait ;)

Comment by Jon Ramvi — August 15, 2008 @ 11:48 am

Thank you for all the hard work on this!

Should i install 8.04 or wait for 8.04.1? I can’t decide! :o)

Comment by Asle Ommundsen — August 15, 2008 @ 11:24 am

Petter, I could make an RC with known bugs, but as we’re all doing this on our free time, it’s not something I prioritize as it’s kind of a waste of time. I also like Nalle Berg’s arguments ;)

Tommer, you don’t Have to install Ubuntu Eee on a memory card. You can install it on the internal drive and have the SD slot free :)

As Adam again has amazed us not only with a great kernel but also a great development speed, Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 is ready to be thrown together. Give me a couple of days and it’s out :)

Comment by Jon Ramvi — August 13, 2008 @ 2:40 pm

I remember Mozilla Firefox pre 1.0. They either didn’t release to early. Wine used 15 years to reach 1.0.

Point being that that is actually one of the benefits with open source. They do not release till they’re good and ready and then they can stand for the product.

So we really do not need a RC with known bugs. I agree 100% (if anyone should care) with the policy of waiting with the release till it’s ready and working.

2.6.24-21-eeepc has gone gold!

Comment by Adam — August 13, 2008 @ 2:55 am

Man, I really wants me some eee! Only have the 2GB and don’t want to have to jump through hoops or waste my SD card slot just to have some sweet Ubuntu action.

Comment by Tommer — August 13, 2008 @ 2:05 am

Couldn’t you make an RC-release with known bugs?

Comment by Petter — August 12, 2008 @ 6:03 pm

hi, if you need someone to betatest your future distribution, I can help. Being myself a programmer I know it is hard to see all the bugs by yourself.

Comment by adrien — August 12, 2008 @ 12:50 pm

Mark and Micheal, Adam, who’s working on the kernel, has run into some problems with the headphones jack. We won’t ship something that doesn’t work :)

Keith Childs, the process is easy. You move any files you don’t want to loose to an usb stick. You make the ubuntu eee usb stick and just click next thought the whole installation process. This will format the drive and install ubuntu eee 8.04.1.

Great work and looking forward to it.With 8.04 already installed on a EeePC 900 will there be a wiki page explaining the steps to uninstall this before installing 8.04.1? I’m assuming this is what has to happen- or if you have enough space can you do the uninstall later?

Comment by Keith Childs — August 6, 2008 @ 7:02 am

Great work, Jon, I am very excited with this new release. I will expect also the SD card ^^ and I think that it will be my main EEE OS, with a full operating system in a full working small computer, the EEE 701.
