I like Urban, followed by Ion. Words that are not made up sound better. And shorter is better than longer. Urban Linux, Urban OS. “My Eee PC runs on Urban.” “This isn’t the Linux the Eee comes with; it’s Ion.” They work, I think.

I haven’t read any comments yet, so I might be repeating someone else’s word, but here is my opinion:
(1) You need a name that is easy to remember. It might be easier if you come up with a some kind of “story”. I mean something like Ubuntu, which also is some kind of african philosophy. Windows and MacOS are self-explaining. Even the name Linux has a short story behind it.
(2) Stay away from anything with “Linux” in name. It will only scare not-so-experienced users away.

Maybe that wasn’t much, but I’m kind of tired right now. Nevertheless I think actually RamviOS is one of the best ones on the list. At first I thought it was a bit ridiculous, but it’s actually not so bad. It’s quite short, easy to remember, unique. Almost all the other suggestions are just too simple. Though I admit – I like “Iris”. I don’t know why, maybe it’s just a nice word :). But with that said, I don’t think you should name an OS something just because it’s a nice word.

Out of the top of my head – you should try a name with associations like “Home”, “Connection”, or “Internet”. I’m too tired to think right now, but with 40 comments a day, there should be someone that can come up with something.

There are a lot of great ideas. I’m not such a big fan of some kinds of names, and I’ll tell you why:
- somethEEEing. The three E’s. We’re going to support all kinds of Netbooks and the three E’s are misleading
- somethux. The tux / linux resemblance. Linux scares new users away. I want to stay as far away from linux as I can :p

Some are wondering why we aren’t not just sending our changes to Ubuntu; and there’s a good reason: Ubuntu Eee is much more than just some drivers thrown into the Ubuntu mix :)
Ubuntu will never come with messy drivers (which is why the EeePC isn’t supported) and Ubuntu will never come with closed source applications like Picasa and Skype. Ubuntu is working for the Open Source Foundation with promoting open source. Ubuntu Eee is working for it’s users with making the best operating system available (that’s the goal anyway)
It’s worth noting that paches and bug fixes we make ARE sent to Ubuntu. Adam, kernel developer, is doing an amazing job keeping them up to date with his latests work.

Where does this idea that eee’s are “urban” come from? I live in the beautiful countryside, and I own an eee. On top of that, everyone I know that owns an eee also lives in the country (most likely because most people I know live in the country, but still – it’s a fact).
To suggest that eee’s are a purely urban item is absolutely absurd, and seems to me like nothing more than an example of typical city-dweller arrogance.
I found Ubuntu for eee by searching “ubuntu eee” on the net. It does exactly what it says on the tin… And as they say, if it ain’t broke – don’t fix it!

I for one like the idea of it being called eeeBuntu but alas…

i have several idea for the intermittent phases for this distro as it grows. im not norwegian but here it goes…

for when it branches to all netbooks…
1. Nomad ([NomadOS, Nomadix] since you move around alot with a netbook. the logo could be a penguin, bear or reindeer dressed as a Sami).
2. Duodji (Again that nomadic Sami theme. also means usefulness, made for a purpose/function. [Duodjeee?])
3. UrbanOS (its cool, but netbooks arnt exclusively “urban”. its kinda big city egoistic. still like it though)

and for the time being when it supports only eee you could call it (im stealing some here)
1. Meeew (like μ/small)
2. Weee OS (like the word wee for small)
3. Neeet OS (reference to netbooks and neat n’ tidiness)
4. Feeeord (like fjord. heh)

I agree with epistaxsis below — keeping “Ubuntu” in the name is important, for at least three really good reasons:

1. It is appropriate recognition of the base distro.

2. It gives people looking for a distro some idea of what to expect.

3. If you choose a name blessed by Canonical, you won’t have to change it again when the team of lawyers for whoever owns the trademark “Urban” or “Aurora” or “whatever” (who are surely not going to be so polite) sends you their list of demands. And they will defend the name against misuse by others, because *their* trademark is part of it.

“Ubuntu for Eee” sounds fine to me — why reject it just because it’s descriptive? I found Ubuntu Eee because I googled on “ubuntu eee” without knowing that such a thing existed, just knowing what I wanted (to run Ubuntu on my Eee). Why shouldn’t it be easy to find?

Two reasons you might not want to choose “Ubuntu for Eee” are:

1. If you plan to make it a distro for netbooks in general as opposed to the eee specifically, then “Ubuntu for Netbooks”, if that’s OK with Canonical, might be a
good choice.

2. You can expect Asus to make the same point about trademark infringement for the use of “eee” in the name, unless they are as enlightened as Canonical, and willing to go on record to that effect.

Keeping Ubuntu in there is *critical* – after all it is the distro that is making the most headway in attracting new users.

IMHO getting further into bed with Canonical can only be a good thing!

My Eee PC came speaking chinese to me & being able to make up a SD & bung it in and get a working machine was just fanatastic.

I’m wondering how are we going to decide the name?
There seems to be another issue too… is Ubuntu eee project going to separate from ubuntu even more and becoming distro based on ubuntu or rather going to still be modified ubuntu specially for netbooks. I’m not sure if the ubuntueee community has enough power to turn it into separate distro. To me it seems that canonical pointed out that we either separete more from them or become part of ubuntu like Mythbuntu. from another hand it may be o that i’m not aware what i’m saying

Not to rain on everyone’s parade, but aren’t we hoping that this project won’t be necessary in a few months and all the fixes for these devices will be integrated into the mainstream Ubuntu? And if the benefit of Ubuntu-eee is the Netbook Remix interface, what would be the point of this project? Not to offend anyone, and please tell me if I’m wrong, but I just don’t see the point. I love the current version (8.04.1) and all, but I’m personally hoping that either Intrepid or Jaunty will have all the drivers and such for the Eee and all other netbooks. And for the interface and default software, the Netbook Remix should cover all of that.

Please tell me if I’m wrong, though.

Anyway, i prefer IRIS – a nice sounding name – its brief and technical. However the existing IRIX is quite related.
I’d also recommend RAMVI regarding the originator and FLOCK (and the logo could be a sheep).

However, I agree with the previous posters who move for sending all fixes you did upstream. Eventually, there will be an official ‘mobile’ ubuntu remix, you might as well make sure you’re credited for it. And I believe the last thing we need is another ubuntu version floating around. Ok, that’s what you are right now, but at this moment you’re at least relevant. (I’m happy to be able to easily install a very nice ubuntu remix on my eee 900, and so are all other users, I imagine)

Ubuntu eee uses Ubuntu’s repositories, Adam’s unofficial v8.04 kernel and Netbook Remix, plus the associated hacks.
All (or most) of these should be included in Ubuntu v8.10.
Your support added to this version would, I believe, be most appreciated.

I don’t like that — except for Ramvi OS — none of these names has anything to do with the eee or Jon or anything.

Ramvi OS sounds a bit cumbersome to me, so what about ROS? That would be short for Ramvi-OS and it means rose in icelandic. (Okay, it’s rós in icelandic, but anyway…)

Maybe someone has some norwegian ideas? That would be really nice.

Iolair (Gaelic for eagle) is a word I’ve come across as a server name a couple of times (the Norwegian Sea Eagle is Europe’s largest predatory bird)

Crex: In the bird dept the Corncrake (Crex crex) has the ending in x credential and he’s small and runs fast. Found in Norway too.

Corax (Corvus corax): the raven. Flies. Intelligent. Widespread. Majestic. No major brand associated even though it fits the three consonants two vowel pattern desired by Kodak, Xerox and others (works in all languages)

Any Norwegian islands with good names? Utsira?

Mercury or Hermes? — gods with winged feet (& not a lot of baggage)

In my opinion, consider bird names for the versioning (noticed most of the names you liked are birds’) It would be analogue to ubuntu’s and mint’s. As for the real name, well, none of the names really calls my attention that much. I like Air since the best part of a netbook is the light weight, (no lin prefix though), Air, wind, storm, stuff like that, Ion? maybe.

I like colibri. Has meaning and sound fine
I really hate names composed by parts of other words, like linair. It sounds like a small grocery store called after the names of the owner’s children, all composed together :-p
Fjord is quite hard to pronounce in my language. For most of the languages this kind of consonants combinations that are really hard to pronounce.
Flock is already the name of a quite popular 2.0 web browser, Aurora and Kiwi are taken…
I agree with most of Max Barry’s points about the rest. But I like Colibri.

My favorite by far is “Ion.” That makes me think “small and powerful.” Also being a homonym for “iron,” it invokes feelings of strength and stability.

Second choice: “Urban.” The initial “U” is a nice link to Ubuntu. Also urban sounds modern and fast-moving, just like netbook owners. :)

I don’t like:

* Troll: bad connotations with internet trolls

* Iris: sounds like an old woman

* Rune: overused in games & fiction (e.g. Runescape)

* Colibri: a little hard to remember and easy to mistype.

* Flock: sounds like file locking

* Swift: too generic; sounds like a distro made purely for speed with no other considerations (like Swiftfox).

* Frost: leaves you open to “Frost has frozen!” jokes. :)

Also Jon, thanks so much for the distro! It’s brilliant.

Name is not the only thing we should think about. We should think how are we going to name different builds(for exaple Ubuntu Hardy Heron). I would suggest using names wich mean colors such as Maroon, the reason is that you won’t run out of them quikcly…Look:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colors
