I like Maroon. Maroon sounds nice and soft. In German this is the name of a mushroom. I like it.

Rune and Urban are also good.

I like "kiwi". Makes me think "small" (like a netbook). But also probably tasty (never actually eaten the fruit). Oh, and it could also mean someone from NZ.. :D

I like Urban, followed by Ion. Words that are not made up sound better. And shorter is better than longer. Urban Linux, Urban OS. "My Eee PC runs on Urban." "This isn't the Linux the Eee comes with; it's Ion." They work, I think.

How about Ebente? Like Ubuntu, but with Uuu taken out and replaced with Eee?

Seriously, there's one staring us right in the face - Wheee! The sound you make when having fun on a ride at a fun park.

Of course, if you want to steer clear of "Eee" to target other mini-laptops, you could always use "Mini Linux". This will end up being a fork, won't it?

Just downloading the newest version, got my eee901 yesterday and loving it already, cant wait to see it without the kinder egg desktop.

Rune really stood out for me when I saw your list, but Fjord and Ion both sound very cool too.

If you wanted a more geeky tint then there are a few cool words from the world of physics like: boson, baryon, hadron etc

This might be a great name for a great OS?

OSiris
- it was a greek god

or:

gOSiris
- gO as in mobility, (on the go), and Osiris as in god which would make the computer a mobil god... ;)

Thanks for a great OS!!

Hello Jon! :)

I haven't read any comments yet, so I might be repeating someone else's word, but here is my opinion:
(1) You need a name that is easy to remember. It might be easier if you come up with a some kind of "story". I mean something like Ubuntu, which also is some kind of african philosophy. Windows and MacOS are self-explaining. Even the name Linux has a short story behind it.
(2) Stay away from anything with "Linux" in name. It will only scare not-so-experienced users away.

Maybe that wasn't much, but I'm kind of tired right now. Nevertheless I think actually RamviOS is one of the best ones on the list. At first I thought it was a bit ridiculous, but it's actually not so bad. It's quite short, easy to remember, unique. Almost all the other suggestions are just too simple. Though I admit - I like "Iris". I don't know why, maybe it's just a nice word :). But with that said, I don't think you should name an OS something just because it's a nice word.

Out of the top of my head - you should try a name with associations like "Home", "Connection", or "Internet". I'm too tired to think right now, but with 40 comments a day, there should be someone that can come up with something.

So...good luck.

Thanks for your comments and ideas! I hope we find our new name soon enough..

There are a lot of great ideas. I'm not such a big fan of some kinds of names, and I'll tell you why:
- somethEEEing. The three E's. We're going to support all kinds of Netbooks and the three E's are misleading
- somethux. The tux / linux resemblance. Linux scares new users away. I want to stay as far away from linux as I can :p

Some are wondering why we aren't not just sending our changes to Ubuntu; and there's a good reason: Ubuntu Eee is much more than just some drivers thrown into the Ubuntu mix :)
Ubuntu will never come with messy drivers (which is why the EeePC isn't supported) and Ubuntu will never come with closed source applications like Picasa and Skype. Ubuntu is working for the Open Source Foundation with promoting open source. Ubuntu Eee is working for it's users with making the best operating system available (that's the goal anyway)
It's worth noting that paches and bug fixes we make ARE sent to Ubuntu. Adam, kernel developer, is doing an amazing job keeping them up to date with his latests work.

Christopher, TMS, I'm in the process of putting up a forum (http://forums.ubuntu-eee.com). It's just that it would be stupid to use time on customizing it to the Ubuntu Eee design as we will have to change it anyway..

mikó, OK :) http://tinyurl.com/6d6naj

StraNNicK, thanks! I'll take you up on that :) Thinking about a competition.

tone, thanks mom

Rawlyn, true. Urban is not a good name.

serola, trademark :(

On this page there's still false link to removed topic "UPDATE: Ubuntu Eee rebranded as ION".

Jon, please let us know what is going on. Naming a child can be difficult, so maybe you should ask more help from your fans. Do we need a second round for re-branding?

Where does this idea that eee's are "urban" come from? I live in the beautiful countryside, and I own an eee. On top of that, everyone I know that owns an eee also lives in the country (most likely because most people I know live in the country, but still - it's a fact).
To suggest that eee's are a purely urban item is absolutely absurd, and seems to me like nothing more than an example of typical city-dweller arrogance.
I found Ubuntu for eee by searching "ubuntu eee" on the net. It does exactly what it says on the tin... And as they say, if it ain't broke - don't fix it!

I for one like the idea of it being called eeeBuntu but alas...

i have several idea for the intermittent phases for this distro as it grows. im not norwegian but here it goes...

for when it branches to all netbooks...
1. Nomad ([NomadOS, Nomadix] since you move around alot with a netbook. the logo could be a penguin, bear or reindeer dressed as a Sami).
2. Duodji (Again that nomadic Sami theme. also means usefulness, made for a purpose/function. [Duodjeee?])
3. UrbanOS (its cool, but netbooks arnt exclusively "urban". its kinda big city egoistic. still like it though)

and for the time being when it supports only eee you could call it (im stealing some here)
1. Meeew (like μ/small)
2. Weee OS (like the word wee for small)
3. Neeet OS (reference to netbooks and neat n' tidiness)
4. Feeeord (like fjord. heh)

EeeBuntu is perfect. It short, shows what it is, and it is euphonic (compare to 'Ebente', 'Ubuntu for Eee' and others. I am admired that the word isn't already picked up. So long live EeeBuntu ! sorry - was only rehearsing ;-)

phonetic spelling from to and the last syllable from Ubuntu ;)

I agree with epistaxsis below -- keeping "Ubuntu" in the name is important, for at least three really good reasons:

1. It is appropriate recognition of the base distro.

2. It gives people looking for a distro some idea of what to expect.

3. If you choose a name blessed by Canonical, you won't have to change it again when the team of lawyers for whoever owns the trademark "Urban" or "Aurora" or "whatever" (who are surely not going to be so polite) sends you their list of demands. And they will defend the name against misuse by others, because *their* trademark is part of it.

"Ubuntu for Eee" sounds fine to me -- why reject it just because it's descriptive? I found Ubuntu Eee because I googled on "ubuntu eee" without knowing that such a thing existed, just knowing what I wanted (to run Ubuntu on my Eee). Why shouldn't it be easy to find?

Two reasons you might not want to choose "Ubuntu for Eee" are:

1. If you plan to make it a distro for netbooks in general as opposed to the eee specifically, then "Ubuntu for Netbooks", if that's OK with Canonical, might be a
good choice.

2. You can expect Asus to make the same point about trademark infringement for the use of "eee" in the name, unless they are as enlightened as Canonical, and willing to go on record to that effect.

I found Ubuntu Eee because I googled on “ubuntu eee” without knowing that such a thing existed, just knowing what I wanted (to run Ubuntu on my Eee). Why shouldn’t it be easy to find?

Two reasons you might not want to choose “Ubuntu for Eee” are:

1. If you plan to make it a distro for netbooks in general as opposed to the eee specifically, then “Ubuntu for Netbooks”, if that’s OK with Canonical, might be a
good choice.

2. You can expect Asus to make the same point about trademark infringement for the use of “eee” in the name, unless they are as enlightened as Canonical, and willing to go on record to that effect.

personally, i like the idea of further ubuntu branding should they allow it.. eeeBuntu certainly has a nice ring to it.

otherwise, if the plans are to diverge into a universal netbook OS then UrbanOS sound like a good one. or perhaps eeeNix.

or perhaps or maybe Meeeubuntu (like the letter Mu/μ) or perhaps just plain old Mubuntu/μbuntu.

Munixos sounds cool too.

I like Urban --- or the already mentioned Urbanos (UrbanOS?). Netbooks *are* urban; the name sounds good, and preserves that U as a hint to its Ubuntu origins. :)

Seconds away from trying it on my 901 ;D

I pick Urbanos.
Your city, your life, your system

:)

But, beyond nice branding, you need and easy software instalation system.

I know synaptic is powerfull, but it simply hard for people without internet connectivity.

Compatible with Clik and Run services (like asus xandros or Linux mint is great)

I really like Ion. You've got all the tinieness of an Ion, with the strength of the Ionic Bond. It sums up the Eee, and the project perfectly! Only thing is Ion is a bit... indescriptive. Maybe Ion Linux, or Ion OS.

I Think the project shouldn't have Ubuntu in its name. Ion or Aurora sounds nice. Also Urban is cool. Anyway, these choices can bring also good artworks for a logo for the distro ;)

"Let the Urban be your office."
"Ever thought about taking, 1 desk, 2 lamps, your calendar your tv, the videophone you don't even own, several pens, a bunch of sheets, more sheets, 1,25 tons of sheets, newspapers... from all over the world... ever published, the library of congress and your local library, out to town? Ever tried?
Now you can. Go Urban, and take everything with you."

I think Urban's the best choice.
Bundled with some cool slogan it's perfect.
"Urban,
Always with you, always around you, and it never sleeps."
"Imagine a whole city of thoughts inside your pocket."
And by the way, were going to use it in a school here in germany on a large scale, and as an admin I want to say something cool everyday^^.

In my opinion names like Frost or Aurora are not very descriptive and not very well to remember, (not brainbranding ^^)

Icon (or Iconic or Iconical)
- the Asus EEE PC and others have quickly become iconic, huge numbers of people really love these netbooks
- an icon represents a set of positive and sort after qualities
- the netbook UI displays application icons all over its interface

Keeping Ubuntu in there is *critical* - after all it is the distro that is making the most headway in attracting new users.

IMHO getting further into bed with Canonical can only be a good thing!

My Eee PC came speaking chinese to me & being able to make up a SD & bung it in and get a working machine was just fanatastic.

Keep up the good work

I'm wondering how are we going to decide the name?
There seems to be another issue too... is Ubuntu eee project going to separate from ubuntu even more and becoming distro based on ubuntu or rather going to still be modified ubuntu specially for netbooks. I'm not sure if the ubuntueee community has enough power to turn it into separate distro. To me it seems that canonical pointed out that we either separete more from them or become part of ubuntu like Mythbuntu. from another hand it may be o that i'm not aware what i'm saying

Fjord is genius! I think of the sketch Dead Parrot from Monty Python. "Pining for the fjords?. That's genius that is. I'd love that on my Asus Eee (of course with a "Norwegian Blue" theme!)

Not to rain on everyone's parade, but aren't we hoping that this project won't be necessary in a few months and all the fixes for these devices will be integrated into the mainstream Ubuntu? And if the benefit of Ubuntu-eee is the Netbook Remix interface, what would be the point of this project? Not to offend anyone, and please tell me if I'm wrong, but I just don't see the point. I love the current version (8.04.1) and all, but I'm personally hoping that either Intrepid or Jaunty will have all the drivers and such for the Eee and all other netbooks. And for the interface and default software, the Netbook Remix should cover all of that.

Please tell me if I'm wrong, though.

lol Yellowseed , your suggestion reminds me of Wooldoor Sockbat's (Drawn Together) catchphrase "Wheeeeeeeeeeee!!!" .

Anyway, i prefer IRIS - a nice sounding name - its brief and technical. However the existing IRIX is quite related.
I'd also recommend RAMVI regarding the originator and FLOCK (and the logo could be a sheep).

Maroon is a little too close to moron ;-)

As far as a name goes, how about "mobuntu" ?

I like Colibri.

However, I agree with the previous posters who move for sending all fixes you did upstream. Eventually, there will be an official 'mobile' ubuntu remix, you might as well make sure you're credited for it. And I believe the last thing we need is another ubuntu version floating around. Ok, that's what you are right now, but at this moment you're at least relevant. (I'm happy to be able to easily install a very nice ubuntu remix on my eee 900, and so are all other users, I imagine)

I'm currently using Ubuntu eee on my Eee pc 900 and I have to say I love it so far, everything seems to work really well. Great job with this distro, it rocks hard! :)
As far as names go how about Valkyrie?

Just a nice word. Easy to remember, no association with other projects like <a href="http://www.rssowl.org/" rel="nofollow">Owl or <a href="http://modeemi.fi/~tuomov/ion/" rel="nofollow">Ion</a>.

P.S. I can help with logo design.

Although I believe you have done a fantastic job, I would like to support the comments of mzander, hanzz and Jevin.
Ubuntu eee uses Ubuntu's repositories, Adam's unofficial v8.04 kernel and Netbook Remix, plus the associated hacks.
All (or most) of these should be included in Ubuntu v8.10.
Your support added to this version would, I believe, be most appreciated.

Rrrright. And what about the Anglo-Saxon expression "I zeenk you arr taking ze pis"?

Does it make sense to invoke the EEE when the distro is going beyond it? No.

What's not to like about walkbout (apart from eating witchity grubs)?

One one level it just implies "small OS". Cute.

Then check the Wikipedia entry to understand the legacy of Minoan civilisation.

I just think the same as "mzandrew":

Instead of making a multi-netbook-friendly distro based on ubuntu with the netbook remix stuff enabled, wouldn’t it be better to push the changes that make ubuntu work on all the eeePCs (and other netbooks) upsteam so that we could just download the latest ubuntu and use it?

I'm not trolling or trying to start a flamewar - I'm typing this from an eeePC 901 running ubuntu-eee 8,04,1 (great job, btw) and I think it's the bees knees.

Somehow, my comments keep being eaten...

Okay, some new suggestions:

Linux Ram, or
Rambutan

Explanation:
The Ram is an animal whose appearance somewhat resembles the GNU. (Very much linux...)
Ram = Ramvi
and to honor the descendance from Ubuntu, the word Rambutan is a similar-sounding word connecting all of the above.
And the Rambutan is a sturdier and better fruit than the Apple :p

I don't like that -- except for Ramvi OS -- none of these names has anything to do with the eee or Jon or anything.

Ramvi OS sounds a bit cumbersome to me, so what about ROS? That would be short for Ramvi-OS and it means rose in icelandic. (Okay, it's rós in icelandic, but anyway...)

Maybe someone has some norwegian ideas? That would be really nice.

Cheers,
buzz.

I think there is no need to change the name. - is there?
If it is, my suggestion is:

          LeeeNUX

Well, its a discribing name too,
but its more neat.

I guess Colibri is the best. For two reasons:
1. Bird as small as laptops our OS is designed for.
2. Nice word, easy to pronounce, so it can be a good brandname.

Out of the list I like "Urban", mostly yes because net books fit well into a urban lifestyle.

I think it could also be a part of the new style of work and life that Dell has been promoting with their "Digital Nomad" campaign.

So, Quax didn't make it eh?

Colibri is an existing brand of cigarette lighter. Colibrix ok probably

Iolair (Gaelic for eagle) is a word I've come across as a server name a couple of times (the Norwegian Sea Eagle is Europe's largest predatory bird)

Crex: In the bird dept the Corncrake (Crex crex) has the ending in x credential and he's small and runs fast. Found in Norway too.

Corax (Corvus corax): the raven. Flies. Intelligent. Widespread. Majestic. No major brand associated even though it fits the three consonants two vowel pattern desired by Kodak, Xerox and others (works in all languages)

Any Norwegian islands with good names? Utsira?

Mercury or Hermes? -- gods with winged feet (& not a lot of baggage)

Flock taken, Iris used left and right by opticians, SGI and others

Arctix: Northern connotation, cool, x ending, magical ring; but.. snow pants brand?! So.. arktix?

Troll and urban are a little pedestrian; kiwi -- cute bird but .. bootpolish brand, southern hemisphere

vademecum (vade mecum = latin "go with me" - something regularly carried about by a person); nice alternating consonant and vowels; classical

Defenestrix: having no "Windows" (just for grins)

Ion: ionix is cuter, probably taken. (What's the take vis a viz a domain name?)

Any famous cold winds? zephyrx?

I really liked Mimir's suggestion for the new OS name; Rune.

It seems like such a light name, at the same time it means a lot more.

Beside, i can imagine so many cool logo concepts based on "Rune"

I like Swift,Because netbooks are Swiftly) and Frost (it sticks to you like a Frostbite) the best.
Both names just really sounds good.
Q what kind of OS are your running on your netbook?
A Iam running Swift because it makes my netbook runs swiftly
or
A Iam running Frost it just give my netrbook that extra Frostbite.

+1 for Ion, but it will be somewhat hard to match with "release codenames", aka Ubuntu, unless it's pretty cheesy names like "Ion Storm, Ion Particle, Ion Cascade, Ion Flux, LHC" etc...

and colors for codenames? Makes me think of Pokémon :p

Suggestion: We should have a "community forum" so that we don't communicate with blog comments though...

Hi.

Aurora is taken by some gtk engine + vista's wallpaper's name, it would be confusing.

Flock is another one that's confusing.

---
In my opinion, consider bird names for the versioning (noticed most of the names you liked are birds') It would be analogue to ubuntu's and mint's. As for the real name, well, none of the names really calls my attention that much. I like Air since the best part of a netbook is the light weight, (no lin prefix though), Air, wind, storm, stuff like that, Ion? maybe.

Ion is probably the best, or maybe U-ion (can be pronounced as union) because I think Ubuntu is still the core.

Also, it would be nice to have few more color scheme for the desktop once this re-branding is decided :)

I like colibri. Has meaning and sound fine
I really hate names composed by parts of other words, like linair. It sounds like a small grocery store called after the names of the owner's children, all composed together :-p
Fjord is quite hard to pronounce in my language. For most of the languages this kind of consonants combinations that are really hard to pronounce.
Flock is already the name of a quite popular 2.0 web browser, Aurora and Kiwi are taken...
I agree with most of Max Barry's points about the rest. But I like Colibri.

My favorite by far is "Ion." That makes me think "small and powerful." Also being a homonym for "iron," it invokes feelings of strength and stability.

Second choice: "Urban." The initial "U" is a nice link to Ubuntu. Also urban sounds modern and fast-moving, just like netbook owners. :)

I don't like:

* Troll: bad connotations with internet trolls

* Iris: sounds like an old woman

* Rune: overused in games & fiction (e.g. Runescape)

* Colibri: a little hard to remember and easy to mistype.

* Flock: sounds like file locking

* Swift: too generic; sounds like a distro made purely for speed with no other considerations (like Swiftfox).

* Frost: leaves you open to "Frost has frozen!" jokes. :)

Also Jon, thanks so much for the distro! It's brilliant.

I like Colibri, maybe something like "Cool Colibri", tying into the whole Ubuntu Adjective + Animal thing. (But with tiny animals, to reflect the tininess of netbooks)

I think Ion is the best candidate. It's short and elegant.

I think Swift sounds ugly. While Ion is mostly vowels, Swift is a sharp and cold sound.

Ion sounds cool and holds meaning. Swift comes a close second ... Ubuntu Ion ... Ubuntu Swift ... Hmmm ... Ubuntu Eon? That means a million years. It also holds an E from EEE, and says ON, as in online.

:-)

Name is not the only thing we should think about. We should think how are we going to name different builds(for exaple Ubuntu Hardy Heron). I would suggest using names wich mean colors such as Maroon, the reason is that you won't run out of them quikcly...Look:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colors

Whhat comes to the name it should be something wich describes the OS such as Ion (Small),Linair (it's supposed to look like one word but...) and Swift. I like name Swift but I just feel that that name is too commonly used (Suzuki Swift, some programs such as Swift Publisher and some companies).

I like Swift, as that's what the OS is, (fast, and clean)...

Flock, aurora, troll all have other meanings in computer/internet speak, and would confuse things.

Plus troll makes it seem unwieldy and ugly.

Go swift!

I don't think Flock would do it, because it also is the name of a browser.

I like Swift, but don't know why, and i like Troll, because i am a Norwegian. :-)
