Ubuntu rEeeMix sounds good to me (with whatever capitalization makes the most sense).

However, if the next version will be for netbooks in general and not just the Eee, then NetBuntu makes the most sense (although keeping the eee roots would be amusing as "N3tbuntu"

As a side note, Canonical would have to be pretty dense if they didn't pick up this project and support it. A clear mission, based heavily on ubuntu, and with a quickly growing market... it doesn't take an MBA to realize the potential there.

I like the word Tukano or Tucano (in english is Toucan), it a tropical bird from Amazonia with lively colors, which is good inspiration for creating logos.
Also the Tucanos or Tukanos are a group of amazonian tribes in which marriages are between members of different tribes and since they all have different languages each Tukano speaks a minimum of 3 languages and usually 5 or 6 of them.

I like ION, simple direct and easy to connect with the product and logo.

I'd simply change it to something similar like Muon.

Heck I'd even be willing to prototype a few logo's for you if you want.

Saami sounds about the right level of exotism. Noitarumpu is Finnish for the shamanic drum saami shamans use to go into trance. Runebom in Norwegian. Goavddis in N Saami.

Noid is the Saami name for the shaman.

I like the name 'Ubuntu'. Not just the sound, but there's something appealing about it being meaningless to me, an English speaker, but drawn from the indigenous language of Mark Shuttleworth's home country.

So I was thinking, netbooks are for people on the move. You're Norwegian, right? People on the move are nomads. The Sami are nomads from Norway (and other nordic countries). Is there a really nice sounding Sami word that just sums it up? Can't help more than that as I don't actually know any Sami words, but it was an idea. Actually maybe I know one - Kota. Mmm, home on the move, could work?

Thanks for all your ideas! We're very close to rebranding now!!
I'm reading all your comments. I like Duodji, Myon/Muon, Ncane, Glovebox/Glovebook and Lure :)
@Max Interesting.. Thanks for sharing your trademark knowledge. I'm not confident enough to go for Ion though
@Foomandoonian Wow, nice! Thinking about it

Another suggestion I would like to see come to effect would be an extra step in the installer to choose if you want a standard gnome desktop or to use the netbook interface. (since I do not use it..)

I was just thinking about a new name this morning and came up with following:
- lure (Linux-Ubuntu Remix Eee). This should lure people away from the other OS out there ;-)
- uree (Ubuntu Remix Edition Eee, ureeeeey)
- unre (Ubuntu Netbook Remix Eee, could also be considered an UNREal dream)

I'm still confused as to why it "needs" to be rebranded so heavily.
At heart I'm an Ubuntu user, and out of choice I would use Ubuntu over any other OS in pretty much any situation. If this distro cuts it's association with Ubuntu (despite largely being the result of the work of those involved with the Ubuntu project as a whole), I'd be inclined to remove it from my system and replace it with something more honest.
At least the name "Ubuntu for eee" (or something similar, within Canonical's requirements) gives credit to the many good people who worked long and hard to make Ubuntu the outstanding OS that it is.

Oh, and Ubuntu.NET?! Why not go the whole way and call it "Microsoft Ubuntu", "McUbuntu" or "iUbuntu" and really see how many trademark laws we can violate...!

I vote Ubuntu Eee Remix, not far off from what identification you started with, easily recognizable as the same to people who are already familiar with the project, and fits what Ubuntu will accept.

Don't know if this is related, but my update manager tonight wants to uninstall eee-osd and ubuntu-eee (I didn't let it). Is this the new update for Ubuntu-eee or Canonical getting tetchy?

Nomad? You have got to be kidding! There's this MP3 player, you know.. trademark issues and all that.

I really can't see what's wrong with Ion. Who exactly complained, and what exactly are they using this unregistered trademark on?

please seriously consider my naming recommendation of Nomad. i think its reflect both the netbooks smallness and mobility and you can squeeze in some of your Norwegian heritage too. anyhoo. it would be nice if it was put on a list for consideration somehwere. but hey if no one likes it... thats cool too i guess.

Nomad ([NomadOS, Nomadix] since you move around alot with a netbook. the logo could be a penguin, bear or reindeer dressed as a Norwegian Sami).
or...

Duodji (Again that nomadic Norwegian Sami theme. also means usefulness, made for a purpose/function. [Duodjeee?])

Oh, by the way, anything with "EEE" in the name is far more likely to attract trademark trouble than "Ion," because it may imply endorsement from Asus. You certainly couldn't argue that the similarity between your product's name and theirs was coincidence.

An unregistered trademark? You have to be kidding. That shouldn't stop you.

Trademarks provide very limited protection, even if they're registered. Essentially, they stop people impersonating you. "Ion" is a common word and would be in use by thousands of businesses and products throughout the world (which is why you can't register it). NOBODY has exclusive rights to the word "ion," nor can they stop you from using it in unrelated ways.

I don't know who claimed otherwise, but you are completely entitled to issue a product named something like "Ion Linux," so long as it could not be reasonably construed as impersonating another company/product or confusing customers.

Some people/organizations will claim ownership of anything. I had a similar experience:

There is already a project www.eeebuntu.org
But maybe both projects might be combined to a single project named "eeebuntu" ?
Otherwise, how about "triple E"?
