Essentially, they stop people impersonating you. “Ion” is a common word and would be in use by thousands of businesses and products throughout the world (which is why you can’t register it). NOBODY has exclusive rights to the word “ion,” nor can they stop you from using it in unrelated ways.

I don’t know who claimed otherwise, but you are completely entitled to issue a product named something like “Ion Linux,” so long as it could not be reasonably construed as impersonating another company/product or confusing customers.

Some people/organizations will claim ownership of anything. I had a similar experience:
