UPDATE: Re-branding Ubuntu Eee

A couple of days ago I released a post where I announced that Ubuntu Eee will be re-branded as ION. While we were all very happy about this, some were not and said we couldn’t use the name because they have an unregistered trademark.

So sadly the naming discussion continues…

If not ion then it should be Linair, uLin, Minilin or Lin

Comment by Keaien — December 9, 2008 @ 3:42 pm

Ubuntu rEeeMix sounds good to me (with whatever capitalization makes the most sense).

However, if the next version will be for netbooks in general and not just the Eee, then NetBuntu makes the most sense (although keeping the eee roots would be amusing as “N3tbuntu”

As a side note, Canonical would have to be pretty dense if they didn’t pick up this project and support it. A clear mission, based heavily on ubuntu, and with a quickly growing market… it doesn’t take an MBA to realize the potential there.

I like the word Tukano or Tucano (in english is Toucan), it a tropical bird from Amazonia with lively colors, which is good inspiration for creating logos.
Also the Tucanos or Tukanos are a group of amazonian tribes in which marriages are between members of different tribes and since they all have different languages each Tukano speaks a minimum of 3 languages and usually 5 or 6 of them.

I like the Sami idea :)

Thanks for the offer wayne tedder! I might just follow you up on that! ;) Don’t waste your time before we’re approaching a decision though :)

Comment by Jon Ramvi — December 4, 2008 @ 1:58 am

I like ION, simple direct and easy to connect with the product and logo.

I’d simply change it to something similar like Muon.

Heck I’d even be willing to prototype a few logo’s for you if you want.

Comment by wayne tedder — December 4, 2008 @ 1:32 am

I propose MUB
Sounds like “move”, and has the greek M (micro)

Comment by Araceli — December 4, 2008 @ 1:25 am

Saami sounds about the right level of exotism. Noitarumpu is Finnish for the shamanic drum saami shamans use to go into trance. Runebom in Norwegian. Goavddis in N Saami.

Noid is the Saami name for the shaman.

Comment by Sushipumpum — December 2, 2008 @ 10:59 pm

I like the name ‘Ubuntu’. Not just the sound, but there’s something appealing about it being meaningless to me, an English speaker, but drawn from the indigenous language of Mark Shuttleworth’s home country.

So I was thinking, netbooks are for people on the move. You’re Norwegian, right? People on the move are nomads. The Sami are nomads from Norway (and other nordic countries). Is there a really nice sounding Sami word that just sums it up? Can’t help more than that as I don’t actually know any Sami words, but it was an idea. Actually maybe I know one – Kota. Mmm, home on the move, could work?

Thanks for all your ideas! We’re very close to rebranding now!!
I’m reading all your comments. I like Duodji, Myon/Muon, Ncane, Glovebox/Glovebook and Lure :)
@Max Interesting.. Thanks for sharing your trademark knowledge. I’m not confident enough to go for Ion though
@Foomandoonian Wow, nice! Thinking about it

Comment by Jon Ramvi — November 27, 2008 @ 12:19 am

How about UMbuntu – Ultra Mobile ubuntu. I can see this distro ultimately being used on more than just the eee range of UMPCs.

Comment by Somniac — November 26, 2008 @ 12:38 am

Well, then you could go for Eeeon, besides sounding like ion in some languages, also reminds of Aeon, which is cool.

Comment by Pepa — November 25, 2008 @ 3:31 pm

Got it!
UberEEE. Cuase when I load this on my EEE its a freaking uber box!

How about nbuntu, like an up side down u, but stands for n*et. Easy to remember, shares similarities, why not?

I was just thinking about a new name this morning and came up with following:
- lure (Linux-Ubuntu Remix Eee). This should lure people away from the other OS out there ;-)
- uree (Ubuntu Remix Edition Eee, ureeeeey)
- unre (Ubuntu Netbook Remix Eee, could also be considered an UNREal dream)

I’m still confused as to why it “needs” to be rebranded so heavily.
At heart I’m an Ubuntu user, and out of choice I would use Ubuntu over any other OS in pretty much any situation. If this distro cuts it’s association with Ubuntu (despite largely being the result of the work of those involved with the Ubuntu project as a whole), I’d be inclined to remove it from my system and replace it with something more honest.
At least the name “Ubuntu for eee” (or something similar, within Canonical’s requirements) gives credit to the many good people who worked long and hard to make Ubuntu the outstanding OS that it is.

Oh, and Ubuntu.NET?! Why not go the whole way and call it “Microsoft Ubuntu”, “McUbuntu” or “iUbuntu” and really see how many trademark laws we can violate…!

Comment by Rawlyn — November 7, 2008 @ 2:09 pm

I vote Ubuntu Eee Remix, not far off from what identification you started with, easily recognizable as the same to people who are already familiar with the project, and fits what Ubuntu will accept.

Don’t know if this is related, but my update manager tonight wants to uninstall eee-osd and ubuntu-eee (I didn’t let it). Is this the new update for Ubuntu-eee or Canonical getting tetchy?

Nomad? You have got to be kidding! There’s this MP3 player, you know.. trademark issues and all that.

I really can’t see what’s wrong with Ion. Who exactly complained, and what exactly are they using this unregistered trademark on?

Comment by zcat — November 3, 2008 @ 9:15 am

please seriously consider my naming recommendation of Nomad. i think its reflect both the netbooks smallness and mobility and you can squeeze in some of your Norwegian heritage too. anyhoo. it would be nice if it was put on a list for consideration somehwere. but hey if no one likes it… thats cool too i guess.

Nomad ([NomadOS, Nomadix] since you move around alot with a netbook. the logo could be a penguin, bear or reindeer dressed as a Norwegian Sami).
or…

Duodji (Again that nomadic Norwegian Sami theme. also means usefulness, made for a purpose/function. [Duodjeee?])

Comment by chubbstar — November 3, 2008 @ 3:44 am

Oh, by the way, anything with “EEE” in the name is far more likely to attract trademark trouble than “Ion,” because it may imply endorsement from Asus. You certainly couldn’t argue that the similarity between your product’s name and theirs was coincidence.

Comment by Max — November 3, 2008 @ 1:04 am

An unregistered trademark? You have to be kidding. That shouldn’t stop you.

Trademarks provide very limited protection, even if they’re registered. Essentially, they stop people impersonating you. “Ion” is a common word and would be in use by thousands of businesses and products throughout the world (which is why you can’t register it). NOBODY has exclusive rights to the word “ion,” nor can they stop you from using it in unrelated ways.

I don’t know who claimed otherwise, but you are completely entitled to issue a product named something like “Ion Linux,” so long as it could not be reasonably construed as impersonating another company/product or confusing customers.

Some people/organizations will claim ownership of anything. I had a similar experience:

But maybe both projects might be combined to a single project named “eeebuntu” ?
Otherwise, how about “triple E”?

I looked through the comments, but couldn’t find the obvious (surely it’s been suggested):
“Eeebuntu”

2) Tripoli (“triple e”, get it?)
3) Fourthe (fourth e)

It’s the name of a cetain particle (in swedish) that exists all around us, all the time. But each one of these exists for 2,2×10^-6 seconds (atleast longer than my battery time on my eeePC 900 since I installed friggin Ubuntu eee)

Carbontube linux (yes it’s long) but they are small it’s not already taken and you could reuse the logo (tho making it look more like a carbon tube would be better). Regardsless of name change Great work on the distro, just my dvb-t and irda to make work and i’ll be fully functional.

Comment by no1 — October 26, 2008 @ 7:14 pm

Call it “eee-on”. Pronounced almost like ion and your well done. And sounds like its on a on eee:)

Comment by Fir3fly — October 26, 2008 @ 5:53 pm

I have just discovered Ubuntu Eee and I’m loving it already. Having seen this discussion, I think I’d chime in with my suggestion ;)

My vote goes for “Charm”. It is a short and nice abstract name, and has all kinds of positive associations. As the name of a quark, it is connected with the “atom” theme. It also has some meanings on the mystical side, such as “spell” or “amulet”, which would make for a very cool and identifiable logo… something Ankh-like, for example. Or something resembling the Ubuntu logo to honor the connnection to the Ubuntu project.

Comment by CP — October 26, 2008 @ 4:56 pm

sounds good but the logo needs serious serious work.

Comment by p_user — October 26, 2008 @ 9:12 am

Comment by me again — October 25, 2008 @ 11:05 am

just call it “ncane os”.

Comment by somebody — October 25, 2008 @ 10:53 am

Thanks for all of your hard work on ubuntu-eee (“remix”). I finally bit the bullet and installed it on my internal SSD (EeePC 701 8G 1G).

I think I would also opt for the “ubuntu-eee remix” name change. What about using the Ubuntu logo, but changing the color scheme to that of the Asus shades of gray & white (like on the splash screen)?

Comment by Mark Bowers — October 25, 2008 @ 10:21 am

Here are some more random naming ideas:

Ubuntu ReeeBoot
Netbuntu
MiniBuntu
Ubuntu Eee-Ram (for Ramvi!)
Ubuntu Eeeasy
Eeebox Lite

No sure if everyone has already shot down similar names, but I thought I would chime in with my two cents.

Thanks for the great work on this custom Ubuntu distro for the Eee – I’m excited to see what you are able to accomplish with the Ibex disto which will be released in a few days.

Comment by John — October 25, 2008 @ 4:43 am

If you’re feeling particularly bitter, try “SnUbuntu”, as in a contraction of Snub Ubuntu (or “snubbed by Ubuntu”). See: http://www.wordwebonline.com/en/SNUB)

Or less angry and more to the point, sUbuntu, as in _small_ Ubuntu.

At any rate, nice work, Kudos, and good luck with the name!

Comment by Mirage — October 25, 2008 @ 1:59 am

(Ubuntu: Its name comes from the Zulu word “ubuntu”, loosely translated as “humanity”)

so i googled for a zulu dictionary and searched for a couple words:

ncane adj. [ˈn͡ǀa:ne] = small
lula [rel.] = easy
funda = learn
sebenza = work
dlala = play
ikhompyutha = computer

JUST AS AN INSPIRATION!

for more words go here: http://isizulu.net/

Comment by Abra Cadaver — October 25, 2008 @ 12:34 am

I like Maya (as in the mesoamerican civilization). Sounds cool.
Thanks Jon for an awesome distro!

Comment by ppyo — October 24, 2008 @ 10:41 pm

I would prefer to drop “eee” from the distro name completely, because of the expanding into other areas other than the Eee PC. And you don’t want the distro named light or slim because when using it, you can’t tell it’s a light distro. So how about naming it after something that is small, but can hold a lot of stuff: Glovebox. Glovebox Linux. This idea came to me because I am an amateur filmmaker who keeps my Eee PC in my glovebox in case I run into a potential client at a bar, club, the park, StarBucks or where ever so I can show examples of my work and take notes of what they might be interested in and/or enter their contact information into my machine for follow up. This name also coincides well with the EeeBox name. But most importantly I think it describes Ubuntu Eee perfectly and the name doesn’t exclude the OS from any hardware it may run on in the future. PLEASE consider my request… or I’m switching to Puppy Linux (pupeee). lol. At least it fits my nickname (Scooby). lol. j/k. I love Ubuntu Eee. Glovebox is the perfect name for it.

Comment by Scooby — October 24, 2008 @ 9:05 pm

Jon,

I was shocked and dismayed after I read the e-mail from Canonical.

Why don’t they make you a full-blown sponsored project, and hire you with a living wage!!!

I Love the circle of friends eee logo, and your world class home page: http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/

THIS, my dear friend; is what prompted me to make a SUBSTANTIAL DONATION — WITHOUT, MIND YOU — WITHOUT EVEN INSTALLING THE SYSTEM AND TEST DRIVING IT !!!

Canonical would be remiss, derelict in their duties and utterly foolish TO FAIL to beat down your door — Contractually offer you Substantial Compensation, Legalize, Legitimize and Officially Promote your movement.

Why?

Because of your clear and concise mission statement, your innate understanding of widening your scope — with precision I might add — and the common-sense entrepreneurial acumen which you Prove by watching your own trends.

Also, The Honesty and TRUE Transparency of your financials.

Gee, how many Eee PCs are paid for and operating right now??!!!

Um, I don’t have those numbers in front of me at the moment; but it doesn’t take an MBA to see the industry running at breakneck speed to offer a similar product. Almost everyone has a very special place in their heart for the group, company, product and/or movement that took the risk, successfully created a new market, and fulfilled a dire and desperate need.

Enough said.

Please feel free to post, forward or send this communique anywhere or to anyone within or without ‘the company’, the community and/or ‘the movement’ as you see fit — as it serves as my introduction to the above said parties.

Up until this point, I have been a silent observer.

However, I cannot in clear conscience, sit back and let anyone or anything take the wind out of the sails of ubuntu-eee.

Onward To Perfection !!!

Oh! blame not the bard

Sincerely,

Burt A. Bialozynski
End User

Why not just leave it as Ubuntu Eee? It’s an Ubuntu distribution that’s specifically flavoured for the EeePC series of notebooks and desktops. It’s simple, gets the point across, gives credit where it’s due, and all people I know with EeePC’s are running it already.
