Update on Easy Peasy 1.1

Oh man, am I tired – I’ve quit school to be able to work full time with Easy Peasy!
We working on some great new stuff.

New webpage (really much needed (!) ): Lasse has made a great design and a unified look for, forums, wiki, backgrounds, presentations etc.

Easy Peasy 1.1: Only a screenshot :) We’re trying to get a release candidate ready for the weekend!

Easy Peasy 2.0: We’re also working towards Easy Peasy 2.0, where we’re implementing some really exciting features

How does the screenshot look? Like the background, like that the logo has been moved to the top left corner, like the icon theme?

Looking forward to 1.1… the color looks more soothing.

I bought an eee 1000HE yesterday, dumped the windows XP, loaded up ubuntu 8.1. All systems a go.
Wanted some control of the Super Hybrid Engine and downloaded eee-control but it wouldn’t work.
Decided I would try ubuntu-eee (easy peasy) and here I am.
Like the look and feel in the LIVE CD so I’m installing it.
I like the idea of a ubuntu focused on eee.

I’m not digging the brand name in the panel applet. Takes up valuable panel space. I’d rather just have the icon.

Hi, Jon.

The web-camera is working now, on the 701. It was disabled in BIOS (Somehow Asus Xandos ignored that setting), I only had to enable it.

The WiFi is crappy though, with the ath5k_pci drivers Easy Peasy 1.0 installed.

I found a work-around to disconnect a connected WiFi connection (since the graphic interface can’t do it!).
I just do:

sudo dhclient -r wlan0
sudo ifconfig wlan0 down

And then I can turn it on again with:

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

But… when doing so, the graphic interface does still show that I have a connection. It does not update..
There’s probably a way to tell it to refresh, but I don’t know how to do it.

Hello:

I’ve just finished installing easy peasy on my eee pc d000. I’ve said many times that desktop Linux will only be successful when hardware manufacturers (or some other team) creates a distribution expressly for the hardware configuration in that machine.

I’ve been trying to have a working desktop Linux system since 1998 and this is the first time I’ve been able to be productive on a Linux desktop.

I gather what I have downloaded ,is version 1.1. I didn’t see version 2.0 available yet.

My problem is this: I’m trying to set up a PPTP connection and have seen the wicd front end which seems more logical from the end user point of view. However, the instructions don’t go as far as Intrepid Ibix, dp when it came time to update my apt sources list, I simply susbstituted Intrepid for the other versions of Ubuntu
available. I know that this is a very standard format and the substitution is logical.

The problem happens when you do apt-get upsdate … you get this error: “…the following keys couldn’t be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY FEC820F4BBC0755A. You may want to run apt-get update to correct theses problems.”

Not correct! running apt-get update will do no good. I know this becaue I’ve been bitten dozens of times in the past by this problem.

I know that the system is supposed to be invisible to the user, however, it always eventually bites me because I will use programs from other related distributions.

Nowhere do I get even a clue what the problem is precisely. I only know apt-key and apt-secure because I”ve encountered this so many times before.

There is one simple command that will fix this, but there is no hint of what it is anywhere… again I know this because I’ve bumped into this problem before.

Could you tell me how to find the key I need for the apt-key ring?

This is almost certainly not your fault. It is almost certainly a bug in the apt package manaagement system which leads users into a dead end by suggesting that apt-get update will solve the problem.

I’m anxiously awaiting EP 1.1! Regarding the screenshot, I would remove the words “easy peasy” next to the lemon icon, it’s a waste of space, especially on the Eee PC 701. Secondly, there’s now an empty bar across the top of the main launcher area (just below the main task bar). In Ubuntu Eee, this used to contain the Ubuntu name and logo, now it has nothing so I think it should be removed and everything else can move up. This would be good to recover some screen space on the low res models like the 701. Otherwise, I think it looks fine. I hope EP 1.1 will fully support the 701! Thanks for the great work!!

Ok, maybe Easy Peasy what I was looking for?

I use Ubuntu for ages now on different machines for fun. On my aspire one I was far from impressed with it’s speed or rather call it slow… on top of it get wifi working needed some tweak what I’m used to but somehow after every major update wifi needed to tweak again… I’m a designer, so I’m not really interested in software tweaking rather than adding brushes and etc to photoshop and illustrator. My AAO is brown so it nicely goes with ubuntu netbook remix. My only concern that ob screenshots you can see (let’s put it nicely,I loved arial rounded back in the 80-90’s but never liked junkwear like limewire) prematured Easy Peasy logo is it possible to get it off?

Already using 1.0 on my 900 without much problems, (except for fonts in Wine on the old WordFinder 4 Windows software, despite using core fonts).
Great job, thanks! Now downloaded 1.1 RC from Distrowatch, ready to test it. But please, what’s changed? Any change log? 8-)

GFlanagan, I think we support the EeePC 1000HE, but v1.1 won’t include better device support. You’ll have to wait for v2.0 in May for that. This goes for you as well Mikael Lindberg :)

I downloaded Easy Peasy last night and it installed itself and when I rebooted back into my new fresh installed to hard Drive Easy Peasy the live installer came up again????

So I reformatted the Hard Drive and reinstalled again same problem, gone back to Ebuntu 8.04

Personally I do not fancy the reduction of a PC, however small, to a phone interface.

A Menu bar, specially that wide is a much better solution, and that wgy phones are like this (they cannot show a wide var in a narroe screen.

The looks? Great! but the point is usability by means of free and clean space.

In a screen this wide, but short on height, the natural solution would be a cross between the 2 opposite ways: 2 vertical icon bars!

One icon bar on the left for menus and chosen applications. Another on the right for status data. This way the screen is less stretched.

Relevant is to note that speed and free RAM are crucial.
- There the http://moblin.org project is doing an excellent work on the bases of the system. – So the merging of Ubuntu and Moblin is the natural and desired answer.

On the Name: Easy is an English word, a qualifier, mot a brand. Peasy is the problem… if the repetition of easy is a goog slogan, slogans are NOT good names. PEasy would be enough as Easy P(c), A(tom) or E(ee) … unless the letters should be considered trademarks as “easy” (which is a ridicule way for a lawyer to show work or to advertise the brand he’s working for)

A Personal note if I may: I send those enterprises to my personal black list for years, as abusive thus with criminal behavior, though it might, may and most times is accepted by the judicial system they use as a pressure, advertising or extortion tool, and against the purpose of needed laws. Such (and I’m commenting in general) aggressions, however polite, should be stopped as what they are. And punished in such cases.

A good name would have been A-Easy OS, or what was suggested above. Hope to have clarified several subjects.

Hi, I’lve loaded Easy Peasy 1.0 on my EEE PC 701 (1 Gb RAM, 4 Gb FlashHD).
And it works fairly well, except with the new 8.10 base, the Video camera doesn’t work, and there’s no menu option to Disconnect a WiFi connection… Huuu? And I can’t toggle Fn+F2 to turn off the WiFi device at all.

Will these things be fixed in Easy Peasy 1.1 ?
Please tell me so…

I read the mail from the attorney from Easy.com. I started thinking perhaps a minor mod to the name Easy Peasy to EzPz. Still pronounces the same way and the attorney can take a leap.

The icon drawing problems in the screenshot is actually just because its run in a Virtual Machine.
It should be fixed when running regularly on a netbook.

andrewjthomas, we’ve never experienced the ugly icon bug on a real netbook. Only when running in a virtual machine. What netbook do you have?

I like the UI improvements. I notice in the screenshot that you have the same icon drawing problems I’ve noticed on mine from time to time. I’m not sure how it gets into that state, but it is ugly and distracting. Any chance that will be fixed in this dot release? Regardless, keep up the great work!

It would be really GREAT if you could develop a way to easily install web filtering software – such as DAN’s Guardian for the easy peasy install. I like Linux and want to run it with the DAN’s Guardian installed. There is a Christian version of Ubuntu – but its not really a cutting edge distro.
