Tony Gray, when connecting to a WEP access point you will have to select what kind of passphrase it is. From the drop down you can select ASCII or HEX. That should get you going :)

Great! Ubuntu Eee loaded and runs fine – thanks. However just TWO little niggles:

1. I STILL can’t get the wireless LAN to work with this (or any other) Ubuntu on my Eee 701 PC 4G. It finds all the local wireless networks OK, but when I select mine and input the (correct) WEP 128-bit passphrase in the Wireless Security window it just refuses to connect. Wired Ethernet works fine.

2. The onboard camera doesn’t work.

Otherwise thanks for an excellent distro. Would just be great to fix the above niggles.

Tomorrow, most of EEE users will have a new, easy to use and powerful OS. Since June I’ve used only the included but not well maintained Xandros (and no user friendly to update or install new apps). Hope I will not miss the Xandros panel functionalities, one thing I like because even my non-computer-friendly friends can use the EEE. First thing I’ll do also, is to install Schism Tracker to make my EEE my main tracker-composition computer :) (Let’s compose everywhere) :D.

Finally, I have a question: new Ubuntu Remix-Edition panel has been translated or it’s only in English?

How ironic that it’s impossible to read your blog on my Eee PC. The left side is totally cut off, only about the right 2/3 of the text is visible. Can’t scroll to the left to get it. Yet when I scroll to the right there is a blank margin.

I got here from tuxmachines.org. I’m using an Eee with the default Xandros, thinking of installing Ubuntu, so you can see why I might like to be able to read your blog. Hope you will fix the page layout.

BenJanoff, Ferry Hendrikx have taken the time to make a script that fixes everything. So you can just sit back, boot up Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 and start surfing :)

D-Locked, 915resolution is something we’ve added because it’s needed by some Eees. It’s only half a mb. I’ll look into removing xorg drivers. Thanks!

Will, yes, I really believe I can have it released on Sunday :)

What mr. Anonymous is saying here is true. The drive in your Eee and memory cards are of the same kind. It’s true that they don’t handle as many writes as a hard drive. That fact have been however blown out of proportions. Both Apple and Asus are selling machines with flash memory..

Ok Jon, am downloading the iso for your previous ubuntu eee build as a starting point. A couple of weeks ago I followed those ubuntu livecd customisation instructions myself to patch in adam’s kernel to give myself a livecd-onna-usb drive that works fully with the 901 hardware, so if you get stuck feel free to msn or email me in case I can help (am assuming you can see the email address I’ve filled in for this comment!).

When I was hacking about your previous Ubuntu EEE iso to fix the ‘persist’ bug in Hardy and tuck in adamm’s latest kernel I did try booting the iso under qemu and also hit issues – figured it was because adamm’s kernel was tuned for the eee hardware and was missing the support required for the hardware qemu emulates – I have a feeling at the time I thought it was the ide driver that was missing (so it couldn’t find the CD it was booting off). I also had a bit of fun with learning about casper trying to figure out why I was getting dumped to busybox booting off a usb keydrive on the 901 with adamm’s kernel (module issue as well – ehci_ecd needed). Surprising that a stock ubuntu iso is misbehaving tho’. Alas the iso downloads are on my workpc so will have to download ‘em again to take a peek to see if I can provide any insights :)

Only reason i could imagine for permission denied is either you need to sudo, or extract-cd/casper is mounted readonly (how do you mount it?)

Pete, thanks for helping out! The error message is about the floppy, but there’s nowhere to disable it in the virtual machine. And I doubt it’s the real problem – seems it’s just saying something because something is wrong.

I can’t quite read from the screenshot exactly what the errors are preceding the “end_request”. Have a look at BIOS options. Disable any unused drives including floppy etc…
