By the way, I’ve been trying to run it with VMWare on a Vista host, but I can’t get past Busybox. I even tried some tips for changing the bios.bin, but that didn’t work either (http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=3394)

It’d be great to know what I’m doing wrong with it. Any tips? Or know where there’s a tutorial?

Great work, updates does not work in the netherlands, but wen make the choice of the states in synaptic package manager, settings, repositories, and than download from server usa, it workes fine.

The latest ume-launcher packages fixed that for me, maybe you should upgrade in Ubuntu Eee too!

Great little distro. Just got my eee 1000 yesterday, and Xandros (not bad IMO) has already been ditched and Ubuntu eee 8.04.1 rc is already running and happy. Only thing I have to complain about (aside from the stated bugs, like the resume-password-issue and the wifi-fn+f2 hangs the machine) is that the 1000 doesn’t come with the atheros-wifi, and thus I had to modprobe the rt2860sta-module manually before any wifi would run. And off course, no mp3 yet, because the repositories are all borked. Java had to be manually installed…

Good luck on the release (and if you ever bump into me on matnat, be sure to tell me to get you a coffee! :p)

Cannot switch to root even after installing password using
’sudo passwd root’.
Using right password gets “Authentication failure”.
After inserting SD card and trying to open it following error message appears: Cannot mount volume. mount: must be superuser to use mount. My user is in administrator group.

Which is a great idea – but a quick reply; I’m not the only one who’s done a hard job with this project. Yes, I am aware of the site. My idea here is to strickly form a local group to share a site/blog with ideas of how and what we do with Ubuntu-eee. For the only reasons of a hobbiest.

I am not here to take any credit of Ubuntu-eee or here to expliot it in any shape, size, or code of Jon’s hard work. The only thing that I would like to accomplish is to share my ideas and help spread the word of Ubuntu-eee.com. With my site, i want to explain in what ways i am awarded and what servies it brings me over any other OS such as Windows and Mac.

Midnite Mac, I’m in the LA area too! Here’s hoping we get as much bugs out of the way.

I’m gonna take a bit of time to look up the volume issue. Last night I unmuted my sound while playing some MP3 and I got it to full blast. Once I turned it down, I was never able to get it that loud again. I think that problem is noted, so maybe someone will come up with a fix.

I’m still very pleased with Ubuntu-Eee. Even with the bugs that will still be open come 8.04.1, it’s still light years ahead of the stock Xandros distro, or even a vanilla Ubuntu install. I find my Eee very usable now with 8.04.1.

I’m just glad we still have big things to look forward to in the future!

Jon – great stuff and very helpful. Thanks for the hard work. Here is some input from a fresh install on a eee 901:
o Wireless and wired networks come up fine. A number of Ubuntu updates are offered when you run Synaptic including a eepc package “upgrade”. If you accept the “new” package it breaks most of your fixes.
o Using the function key to turn off the LAN freezes the system. A small image pops up to say the Wireless LAN is off but the wireless is still on. I have not found a way to recover without a hard powerdown.
o I can verify the already reported bugs also occur on the 901.

I love NBR too… but unless the resume from hibernate is fixed it is a deal breaker. My advice: If you can fix the resume then include it; if you can’t, then DON’T FORCE IT – folks can always install it themselves later.

This should make a fully working GOLD easier, I would hope…!

Perhaps you can duplicate what eee-ubuntu is doing? They are offering a standard version without the Netbook Remix. And a Netbook Remix version as an alternate download option at: http://www.eeebuntu.org

I am using the latest version of ume-launcher, 0.5ubuntu12 from ppa.launchpad.net, which has fixed the netbook interface issues after a suspend/resume cycle.

Hey Jon,
this is pretty cool, I just installed an SDHC card with 8.04.1 to have a dualboot eee box. It was done in a couple of minutes and works fine so far. Only there was a problem with the update notifier when booting, system gave an erroro report.

Regarding the netbook remix, I installed it on top of regular Hardy (i.e. not the Ubuntu-eee version) and it does resume from suspend with issue. I did use the kernel from http://array.org/ubuntu/setup901.html so maybe that helped.

I have tried NBR interface once, and I think it’s very interesting (albeit buggy). My opinion is that Ubuntu EEE users should be able to switch between both of them at will. Getting this done and eliminating the silly bugs from both NBR and Ubuntu Eee 8.04 are enough for me.

I’ve noticed a new bug in 8.04.1 RC. I like to use ‘root’ sometimes, so the first thing i do when I install any ubuntu version is a “sudo passwd”, in order to give root a password, so I can use it sometimes. The command let me change the password, but it is not effectively changed! if you try to su to root user, it does not recognize the password you set. Not sure if passwd is working for the regular (non-root) user also. Can you please investigate this? I’m using a 701 with 4Gb

henrik, still complete reinstall. Yes it sucks, but the changes aren’t made into debs (which is necessary for upgrading). We will try to fix this with the 8.10 release.

D-Locked, I guess we’ll have to wait for the 8.10 release for mics to work than :)

I think the version looks great. It would really be a pity if the NBR was not included. Yesterday I suddenly remembered a problem I had the old 8.04. It is about the bluetooth function. When I use a bluetooth dongle with a bluetooth mouse I can´t wake the computer up with the mouse if I wait too long (~45min). Then I have to touch the pad to wake the computer and take out the dongle and reinsert it to get the bluetoothfunction again. I am sorry I have not filed a bug report but it will come.

I think turning off the NBR is a great idea; it’s just no finished enough to be used (it’s still buggy and the like). If people want it, then can install it themselves or use the eeebuntu NBR edition or something.

Been running Ubuntu eee 8.04 with NetBook Remix for weeks now and simply love it! Yeah took a little bit of tweaking to get it all working, but the experience is *SO* much better than WinXP (default OS on my 901).
Only issues I have a suspend & hibernate. Though the little beast actually boots faster the resumes from hibernate anyway…
So keep the NetBook Remix in. This is *THE* reason for using Ubuntu on the eeePC!

Appreciate all your hard work, Jon.
Just a couple of suggestions, though it seems you already have them listed in the “bugs”.
1. I was unable to update or install software from the normal ubuntu “add programs”
2. It sure would be nice if it were easy to turn netbook remix off and on. It’s nice to have doing recreational computing, but since I use my 1000 for work, it was much nicer once I removed remix, especially since I use an external monitor about 1/2 the time.

The mic is probably not working for the same reason posted here : http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=39375&p=44

The suggested workaround is to move to alsa packages 1.0.17 or 1.0.18, rather than 1.0.16 in eeeUbuntu.

eeePC installs Ubuntueee 8,04 , but the OS has several problems.
1 reports the battery in evil been.
2 He is extremely slow in the starting (3 minutes), this installed in a SDHC 8Gb.

And because of the clutter suspend bug, look here https://bugs.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-launcher/+bug/237761 and additionally install BenLau’s PPA https://launchpad.net/~benlau/+archive. I think that should fix that.
