Social Desktop

With the release of Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jacalope, Canonical has made a great distro which finally supports netbooks. The Ubuntu Netbook Remix is Ubuntu with the Netbook Remix interface installed which also Easy Peasy uses. But just as we’ve made the linux kernel and Easy Peasy as a whole, a thourowly optimized operating system for netbooks, we want to take the netbook interface one step further.

We want to move web down to the desktop, as you’re using Easy Peasy on a netbook you shouldn’t have to start Firefox to start sufring. We add an Easy Peasy profile on the top right. The dekstop will be open and module based so anyone will be able to write the next great module. Default modules should include Facebook, Twitter, Email, Chat and RSS feeds.

We also want people to start using Gnome Do. We believe that average Joe doesn’t use is today because he’s afraid of keyboard shortcuts, so we’ve decided to move the great Gnome Do application to the desktop (and map it to the Home/Windows/Super key for you keyboard shortcut lovers). That means that while your doing anything, you can click the Easy Peasy logo in the top left or click the Home button on the keyboard and start typing: Search your computer, Google, Translate, Set your Twitter status, etc. all from your desktop.

I have mentioned this on EP forums, but I say it here as well. I think the netbook GUI should look like Tracker application (projects.gnome.org/tracker/) and it should use tags for all kinds of shortcuts: apps, URLs, files, RSS feeds etc.

I am with Kris, Krank, and Thomas Arbs – make optional/switchable. My EEE 900A and Fujitsu Lifebook are much more for me than only “netbooks” (why else would you include apps like Open Office that are most certainly standalone?).

If you want to improve the interface for these 600 pixel-high note/netbooks, they sorely need a window manager that does not let control buttons and text boxes at the bottom of a window fall below the “horizon” – one of the biggest annoyances I have found with this form factor (happens with Win2K, my “other OS”, a lot, also).

I like the plan of a unified social networking application, just as there is unified messaging. It is, however, an application that comes to my mind, not an OS extension. As much as my netbook is a netbook, in some 40% of the cases I open the lid I have no network connection but instead do word processing and stuff. In those cases the thing must eat no, and I repeat no resources I need elsewhere, be it RAM, CPU time (and thus battery life), or screen estate. Which most likely can be had by switching it off, hence: an application.

I’m down with any improvements. Easy Peasy seems so… beta right now. I like the new interface ideas… it’ll really set it apart from things like eeebuntu.

Before i comment, please note that t don’t want to make a flame wars.
But, why everyone doin this on top of Gnome? I think, KDE 4 Plasma would be a great (a beautiful in my opinion) platform to doin this.
Your mockup interface can be made from Plasma widget..
Sorry..don’t mean to hurt anyone.
Anyway, in term of netbook, please make everything as compact as possible, and modular.Especially for my original eee pc 4G :)

Sounds and looks great. And why should this not be handy for the not Joe Average. (The not Joe Average, can easily remove short-cuts in gnome if he/she wants to.)

I like the desktop very much. then all the hardware of my aspireOne is detected and functional. May be I am not enough skilled to put an own written script in the favorites. I tryed to copy/change the *.desktop Files but with less success. For me personally, ep is unusable without my own scripts I need for admins-jobs.

Looks good, but Super? Really? I hope there will be a way to map it something else, since Super-whatever shortcuts just went out the window.

Oh and btw: On my desktop I use gnome-do from alt-f2, which is usually the run-dialogue in Gnome. Why not map it there in addition to Super, since Gnome Do can launch anything the gnome run-dialogue and loads more…
