I'm writing this from my eee-901 running ubuntu-eee. Of the names proposed I like 'netbuntu' the best. It keeps the connection with ubuntu and tells that the os is for netbooks. 'netbookbuntu' is also possible and avoids confusion with other devices.

I like: Netbuntu.

Good for both Netbooks and Nettops such as the Asus Eee Box and the Eee Top (with touch screen) and Ubuntu.

If you plan to derive from Mint instead, then: NetMint :)

- Notex (notebook Linux)
- eeeX (pronounced as X)
- Hornet (small and powerful)
- neXus (as in connector)

I like the one mentioned by others on ere; "Ubun2-eee",that's pretty cool. What about taking the pronunciation of the original word, which is...

"The word 'Ubuntu' originates from one of the Bantu dialects of Africa, and is pronounced as uu-Boon-too."

How about "Drive Linux", just get in and drive. Describes the goal of the project as far as I know, and not too hard for non English speakers to spell. Maybe a car driving in a circle, or maybe with 'e''s for wheels to show where the distro is coming from.

Unfortunately Eeebuntu is already taken by a similar project.

I like Walkabout, but for non english people can be difficult to spell... please don't think only on geeks (specially english mother-tongue geeks). I'd like to see an international, simple, stylish and gadgetly name.

My preferred are (not ordered)
- dot
- Ubee
- e3
- nibble
- eboo

I'm casting my vote for «Walkabout». I had a couple of suggestions myself, but «Walkabout» says nothing about Ubuntu, (never liked the name Ubuntu EEE, but loved the software) and it says all about the machines it's designed for.

motile
motile OS
motile linux

motile the adjective means: exhibiting or capable of movement.
The very nature of a netbook. In another sense highlights the new objective of moving to more hardware platforms.

motile the noun means: a person whose prevailing mental imagery takes the form of inner feelings of action.
Not a snappy as "from freedom came elegance" but something that makes the name sound deep and meaningful :-)

I don't have any idea what the logo might look like.

Mercury

Roman God of Speed and Zeus's messenger, which seems to fit the nature of the netbook. The name obviously can't be a pun on EEE simply because the OS is being extended to include more than just the EEE PC (and imho its just in poor taste).

It'd also make for a cool default metallic theme.

Hi Jon,

I was thinking along the lines of NoteBook Linux (NBL) which kind of extends itself into Nibble and a nibble being smaller than a byte seemed appropriate.

Good luck with your search.

Hi Jon,
How about "electron"?
Inspired by your Ion idea, but smaller.

Of course, you could also use "eelectron" or eeelectron but that ends up having four eeees.

I suppose you have to sort out the rebranding before you can issue version 8.10? Good luck with that, you've really changed the way I use my computer; it's so superior to the Xandros distro from Asus. Thank you,

A few possibilities..

you could focus on the fact that it is a linux distro and just come up with a cool sounding original brand, something like...
GLOSS (GNU/Linux Operating System and Software).. truthfully Im surprised noone has used this acronym yet

you could try to focus on the idea of being for smaller netbooks and go with a name like...
InDecks (a play on words, deck being slang word for netbooks and an index being where you go first when you open a book)

If you are interested in creating alot of website hits I suggest a name like...
FREEPORN OS (the logo could be fun to design too)

and if you want the name to imply how simple and to the point your distro works then I personally like the name...

I suggest Synergy or Synergeee.
"Synergy is the term used to describe a situation where the final outcome of a system is greater than the sum of its parts."

I think that would be awesome for this distribution!

How about Ubuntu rEeeMix? Hopefully Ubuntu won't mind the misspelling of "remix".

I realise that the distro is growing in scope, but I was really just looking for an version of Ubuntu built for Eee, so I prefer having Eee in the name. (I also don't think it's sufficiently different from Ubuntu to create a new name.)

I personally don't want an OS on my Eee PC named Iris or Urban... To me, a amateur filmmaker who uses my Eee PC to show potential clients examples of my work whether I'm on the job at another shoot or just happen to strike up a conversation in a bar or park or restaurant and run out to my car to grab my Eee PC (which fits neatly in my glovebox), I think telling people I'm running Urban or Iris is unprofessional and a little fruity. The OS is only a 600mb download and has a small installed footprint compared to Windows XP's 1.5gb and Vista's 15gb installed footprints. Apple OS X can't even touch that small footprint. And while it's small, but full featured (can hold a lot of stuff). I figured you could name the project Glovebox. Please consider my request. My professionalism depends on it and if it is renamed to Iris or named after a flower, i may change to Puppy Linux (pupeee). At least that goes with my nickname, Scooby. lol. :-)

Thanks for all your comments and ideas! !! !!!

Nacho, Ubuntu is based on Debian, like Ubuntu Eee is based on Ubuntu. And Mint Linux is based on Ubuntu like Ubuntu Eee. None of them (other than Ubuntu Eee) is based on the base name (Ubunbian or Mintuntu). I think we should find our own name :)

Claudio Lima, the problem with "light" names is that they make the OS sound small and uncomplete, like Damn Small Linux. But Ubuntu Eee comes with all you need and isn't really that small..

Cutting the link to EEE is good, as it is already working in other computers.

But keepin a link to Ubuntu is right, because it is *based* on Ubuntu, and it is a good and clear association. However, the association must be not too strong not to conflict with Ubuntu marketing.

Minibun? Netbun?

As for the logo, how about three orange arcs spiralling in? Or a continuous spiral with three orange sections? Possibly with the first letter of the name in the center?

I thought Entu would be a good (or at least -ish) name - short for eee & ubuntu.
Of course, should the eee ubuntu dudes ever make a release with something other than GNOME, you could brand them Xentu and/or Kentu :) I do think though that Gentu would be a bit too close to Gentoo, so:
EEE Ubuntu == Entu
-"- + KDE == Kentu
-"- + xfce == Xentu

One thing that unites the umpc /netbook world is the portability of the machines, so a good name imho would be "Walkabout" Linux, (and in the Australian Aborigine tradition of going "Walkabout")

Don't know if you're interested in building on your Scandinavian-ness, but if so,

1) Viking Linux
2) Lappy Linux

Yes, I know #2 is a pun based on incorrect geography, but I'll bet it slips past most people in the Americas and Far East :)

I would avoid anything with ubu, untu, buntu, or whatever. I'd also avoid the EEE part, since there are plans to support more umpcs, not just the EEE line.
Why not calling it something like

"MINI"
(Ubuntu remix for UMPCs)

It covers the scope and it mentions the name Ubuntu, wich this distro was based on.
IMO, the logo should have nothing to do with the circle of friends, or the ubuntu typography. You can always add a note stating something like "powered by Ubuntu" or something like that, along the copyright notice that clarifies that your project is only based on ubuntu and it's not part of Canonical.

Good luck!

P.s.: oh, BTW. There's already a small distro called Kiwi OS.

ok, one more idea: this is actually an Ubuntu (r) :) Based Netbook Operating System.
URBANOS. URBAN/OS. UrBaNOS.
this may be good, since it refers to the origin and purpose of the OS, and also to the usual place of usage of it. anybody else like that?

I kinda fancy LineAir (=linear, linux Air) suggesting not only a very streamlined distro but a focus on ultraportable machines, and a spiffy name if pronounced correctly.

---> To designers !So, I sum up :
- Ubuntu in the name for newcomers
- Norwegian origin through an animal in the logo and the name : there's something out of the US !
- A nice polar bear cub : polar bears are the victims of global warming in the same way as Linux and Ubuntu have to find a way in the "global Windows world"
- A name that makes clear it's made for little netbooks
- "Ubuntu for liten" (Ubuntu for little) - "liten" is very close to little but it's not an English word. English is not the only langage and there's a life out of the "US world"
- I do encourage designers to draw a nice polar bear cub. It should be simple, nice, obvious and attractive

eeebuntu is not a very good choice i think, for two reasons:
1) There are a lot of people here suggesting *eee* names. I think it would be wise to avoid these suggestions given that there are plans to support other netbooks as well.
2) http://www.eeebuntu.org/

>> London

> I had to laugh. That wasn’t a
> suggestion, it was an accident

But still the coolest name suggested!

> Norwegian polar bears and
> penguins? Tell me more :)

Dronning Mauds Land might have some penguins? That's Norwegian!

> Name it after your girlfriend?

Well - What will happen when a new girlfriend comes along?

Not sure if this is to close to the ubuntu trademark, but what about UMbuntuPC - google says "UMbuntuPC - did not match any documents". As for the graphic, what about something using a penguin chick, ala http://www.rubypenguin.com/ (at the top of the page)

Make it an animal's name. "Doggie Linux"? *cough*

You could call it "Dagros" (Norwegian cow's name. (Hey, it's even pronouncable in English)).

"Jotne" (norse mythical creature)?

Why not EBENTE? :)
... ok, this does not really increase the scope, does it?
but what about NOS? it is dynamic, refers to "Netbook OS" but is not too direct.

As it appears that the future intention is to include all Netbooks if possible, then 'eee' should not be included in the new name.
I would propose something like the following;
'Netbuntu' (although this could be confused with some sort of network system)
'Nbuntu' (this would be my preferred as it is short and implies its use)
Irrespective of the above, congratulations on the effort of all concerned. Using it on a 901.

okay, Ubuntu is based on Debian and yet id doesn't have any similarity in name. So why force Ubuntu branding on "rebranding"??? What's the point of rebranding anyway then?

I quite like the idea of using Tux as a logo in the ubuntu-eee-of-the-future. Not necessary the classic tux image but definatly a penguin. And maybe tux in the name?

Tuxbook?

Tuxbook Remix

Anyone else got any names with Tux? I'm not good with words.

- First, the final name should include Ubuntu. Canonical's mail seems to say there are possibilities to use it : it should be possible to have an agreement with them
- Second, it should mention this distro is made for small computers such as the Eee (but Eee should NOT be used)
- Third,it could mention its norvegian origin in its name and in its its logo through an animal, such as a polar bear cub (because it's made for mini PCs). The bear is a nordic animal, such as a certain penguin...
- So whynot a name such as "ubuntu for liten" (Ubuntu for little) (Det er riktig ? Jeg snakker ikke norsk !)
- Takk for ubuntu eee !

Okay your objective seems to make an Ubuntu release for Netbooks or UMPC's?

If Canonical will let you, what about:
Ubuntu Netbook

If not then:
Ubuntu Netbook Remix

However if you want it to be for all future UMPC's then:
Ubuntu UMPC
Ubuntu Mini
or not allowed then:
Ubuntu UMPC Remix
Ubuntu Mini Remix

These options will allow you to show by the mere name that it's an Ubuntu O/S being offered and what type of machine it's intended user base is. Having the Ubuntu name as the first word is important as despite what Canonical say, there will be a link of desktop Linux brand quality in the users mind.

Also it needs to be a simple brand name so, that it's easy for NEW users to remember and also logo designers can brand easier.

Finally I would reject any link to eee. Why?

Well what happens if Asus drop the EEE brand in the future (it's gotta happen one day)? At that point (which could happen at any time as they control the name not you or anyone else) you will have to re-brand yet again doh!

I prefer:
Ubuntu Mini
If you can get away with, it will also piss Dell off. Which will teach them to make a cheap ass Netbook :P

As in the email they say you can make use of "remix" terminology, how about calling it "Ubuntu eeemix" or "Ubuntu reeemix"? You've got the netbook remix UI in there as well so it fits even more.

As I before mentioned my name suggestion is Linair (Linux+Air). While I was reading comments I saw someone suggesting Aeon. I have already designed logo for that name from scratch so I thought I could show it here as well. Just as a concept of course.

Here's the link: http://img390.imageshack.us/img390/3239/aeoncorpcn4.jpg

Finally something I can be useful for, here it is my brand proposal:
www.idstudio.it/bullx/eee/dog.png
As you can see the main idea is to use a little pet, (white or black it's up to you) as the EEE is..small and white/black.
I dont' have any idea for the *name* I'm more on the "visual" side of things, hope you like my sketch.

> London

I had to laugh. That wasn't a suggestion, it was an accident :-)

Chiba City, the first city in "cyberspace" might be a better city. It was the first place people where "jacked in" to the net with handheld devices "decks" which they carried about

CyberbookOS (clumsy?)

Here's my suggestion:

"Nimbus" - defined as a circle of rays or a halo - so kind of fits the Ubuntu logo and also the idea of something light and weightless with the EEE.

First, I think the mail was very nice, and shows Canonicals values and attitude towards the community. Ant I fully understand their need to protect the trademark, and think the offer to help you with the logo is very generous (but then again, I never liked the logo anyway :-).

Freeetos asks: «Is there a Norwegian word for “humanity towards others” or something as inspirational and euphonic as Ubuntu?»

No. We're not that inspirational and euphonic. The only Norwegian word I can think of in this context, is «Dugnad», which means something like «Talkoot» (Check Wikipedia), ant those can be my suggestions.

But my favourite is Paul O'Nolans suggestion: London

Branding is always an interesting challenge. The hardest part is getting simple brand recognition. It needs something simple and memorable. Take Canonical up on their offer to help. Maybe they'll be willing to link this distro as an "Unofficial Ubuntu"?

My suggestion: "Fluid Tome"

Meaning: Flexible/adaptable book/tablet

A few questions:

How long before all branding must be changed? Is there an offical date stated? Or is this effective immediately?

Many thanks!

Oops, John can you delete last comment posted in error. (sorry and thanks; hit the wrong key)

Just want to say thanks for your work on this.

New names:

Threee ?

(ubuntu-eee being the 2nd, Ubuntu 1st)

I can imagine you don't want to be tied to a brand but it's not a strong tie.

Is there a Norwegian word for "humanity towards others" or something as inspirational and euphonic as Ubuntu?

But hopefully something us monolingual Americans can pronounce...

If it can't be found, I like Ramvix!

"Troll" or "Trollux" (Norwegian sound to it)
"Redux" ('cause it's for the little ones... sounds a bit Red Hattish, though)
"Minux", "Linux Mini" or "Mini Linux"?
"Bullfinch"...
"LML" ( Which says "LML: Mini Linux")

Yawn. Sweet dreams.

Btw: Congratulations on the offer from Canonical to help with the redesign!

Bianca

'Bianca e Bernie' is the Italian name of 'The Rescuers', an animated feature produced by Walt Disney you surely know. And Miss Bianca is, at the same time, kind, nice and a bit sexy. Bianca is also the Italian of female gender for 'white', the color. This could be however an homage to eee pc, also if you're 'increasing our scope'. And it seems to me really a nice name. regards

What about "shadow" as a name - if nobody else has proposed it? Actually Ubuntu for Eee is quite acceptable. Couldn't you use a fragmented Ubuntu logo as if it were bitten into with Eee occupying the missing space. Sorry, I'm not that artistic :\

It is Lo, plain Lo, in the morning, displaying seven inches in two pounds. It is Lola running unbuntu. It is Dolly booting at lectures. It was White Asus EE 4 G B on the dotted digital line. But in my arms it was always Lolita.

Did it have a precursor? It did, indeed it did. In point of fact, I might have brought no Lolita at all had I not loved, one summer, a certain initial subnotebook. In a kingdom by the sea. Oh when? About as many months before Lolita was manufactured as my e-penis was in length that summer. You can always count on a blog-commentator for a fancy prose style.

And three elefants (yellow, orange, brown) as a logo.

Micha, I don't know what it involves, but I guess the team is some full time, full education, designers who got great ideas and know how, which they will share with us :)

I'm sorry reading all this about.
What exactly do they mean by:
"allow us to use their marketing team for our new logo" ?

I like the "Ramvi OS" suggestion - without the OS perhaps.
Why not RAMVIX :-\ or
AEON

Im looking forward.

netbuntu? mixbuntu?
ramvi? electric hedgehog?

bob? (ok, i'm free associating now. )
if you are expanding the scope of the distro, you want something that doesn't PRECLUDE other netbook platforms. leaving the 'eee' out of the name will make it easier for folks not to dismiss your distro as "just for the eee" and missing out.

heck call it "marie" after your darling coffee angel!

Why don't call it: Netboontu

it sounds like Netbuntu (and no trademark are broken, I guess), it is referred to netbook world and it is explicit netbook + ubuntu word...

The logo would be a stylized world or (just to refer to ubuntu word), the African continent...

ciao

Here is my suggestion

Narcis

Cause for us this is The One and Only system for our EEE (or notebooks), and it is the most beautiful one ;)

Logo should represent some kind of flower, with different colors

I think just domain would be a problem.. but it should be fine in combination with some other word (like os, operating system, linux...=

"gnomix"? Sort of right associations in several ways .

Or "tuxedo"?

Or even "tuxeeedo" - but that's only right for eee, and you did not like something specific for eee.

Finally, there is also "eeebuntu"

I´m with Andy on this one, who proposed Ubunteee(eeebuntu already exists).
I think that "eee" should be in the name in some way.
Why not drop Ubuntu from the name and call it EEEnux or LEEEnux.

Since NetBooks are small and light I'm thinking a name along those veins would be good:
*Widget
*Ion
*Aurora
*Neon

Names that wouldn't work (for fun):
*Anvil
*Brick (Brikux :)
*Ton
*Chrome ;)

These words wouldn't be the easiest to Google though. So you may want an original name like Widgux (which sounds like some foreign dish- Widgucks with tartar sauce).

How about Linair (Linux+Air). Netbooks are thin and light. And the perfet OS for them is linux.
You could also use slogan "thin and light." To me it describes perfectly netbooks. In logo light an futuristic font should be used. As far as it comes to logo it should be something that creates image in viewer about something light and perhaps thin.

Maybe you should drop any Ubuntu from name and switch to something new. Maybe, "Vulcan" as primary name, so it distributions may look like VulcanOS, Vulcan.EEE, VulcanOne (for acer) etc...
