“Pre-order” Ubuntu Eee SD cards

You’ve given me lots of feedback through this post and on the Facebook fan page. Thank you! Ubuntu Eee doesn’t have too much money so I’ve only bought 10 SD cards so far. 4GB Class 6, like you asked for. They’re on their way as you read this. Taking shipping into consideration, we should probably ask for more than 50$ per card. Still, we feel that your comments about not going above 50$, to make them affordable for developing countries, sounds reasonable. Thanks again for your feedback!

You will get

  • Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 (harder, better, faster, stronger than Ubuntu Eee 8.04)
  • Ubuntu Eee Plug-and-Play Class 6 SD card
  • to support an open source project which does everything it can to give back to it’s users

How do I get it

You get one of these smashing cards for free when you donate 50$ or more to the Ubuntu Eee project.

It is not in our nature to screw people over, so if you’ve already donated, you can get away with just supplying to your first donation.

Jon, much thanks for doing this. I have a 4g and would like to know if you still have cards to be sold. If so, I’d love to get in on this. Thanks. Todd

p.s. where are they being sent out from?

Comment by Todd Ogi — August 20, 2008 @ 5:49 am

Turk182, no Ubuntu Eee card have been sent out yet. Adam, who’s working on the kernel, has run into some problems with the headphones jack. I will confirm everyone’s address before shipping :)

Hi Jon just wondering if you sent out the Ubuntu card supported for my 1000h model yet? I tried emailing you thru the paypal email you have provided but didn’t get a response. Please update me when you get a chance. BTW I’m the one from New Jersey. Thanks

Comment by Turk182 — August 11, 2008 @ 11:17 pm

Turk182, thank you! I’m just the guy putting it together. Adam is the wizard fixing 1000H support :)

Hello Jon I did my part. Now do your magic so I can run this on my 1000H :) Can’t wait

Comment by Turk182 — August 4, 2008 @ 3:37 am

Turk182, supporting the Eee 1000 version within a week is the plan. You can donate whenever you like :) The cards aren’t ready yet, so it won’t be sent as fast as you donate :/

Comment by Jon Ramvi — August 1, 2008 @ 8:08 am

I see you stated on an earlier post that within a week. My US version 1000H will be supported? Should I donate now since your in Norway and I’m located in New Jersey? Please Update ASAP I can’t wait to run this hehe :)

Comment by Turk182 — August 1, 2008 @ 3:36 am

steve, that’s really hard to say. First of all; Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 isn’t ready yet.
Second; our first 10 cards have been reserved for the first 10 donators, but we will (of cause) order more.
And lastly, I don’t know how long it will take to get it to you.

But OK, let’s make a guesstimate:
8.04.1; ready in half a month
Order new cards; a week
Postage; a week (Norway to Steve)

So my guesstimate is 4 weeks.
Please donate - we won’t push 8.04.1 until it’s totally awesome ;) That’s why you’ll have to wait a little while to get your hands on it.

If it’s flawless or almost flawless for You is also hard to say. I’m going to write a post on what you can expect from 8.04.1. You’ll get all horny and stuff

Comment by Jon Ramvi — July 31, 2008 @ 8:41 am

Hey. If I donate today/tomorrow - approx when would I receive the card? PS - is it flawless or must I tweak and fix stuff after? thanks.

Great news! Our Truly amazing kernel customizer, Adam, tells me that we’re supporting 901 and 1000 within a week

Comment by Jon Ramvi — July 30, 2008 @ 8:44 pm

Ok thanks for the update. Once you do get a 1000 version I will glady donate.

Xenon, thanks for your donations! :)
Turk, the 1000 version isn’t supported as of yet

Andre, thanks a lot. I tried donating with Internet Explorer and experienced the same as you. Only 9% of our visitors use IE though. But now it’s fixed, thanks!

Hi Jon, I tried it again. The Paypal link seems to be broken. I always get the message “Page not found - Paypal”. Maybe this is the reason why you don´t get any donations ?

Comment by Andre — July 16, 2008 @ 11:45 am

Andre, it doesn’t? Please try again. We haven’t gotten 10 donations, but I will order more cards when we’re out.
awhs, it’s hard to look forward in time, but: yes, probably

Comment by Jon Ramvi — July 15, 2008 @ 2:52 pm

when do you think you will have support for the 901 say in 3 months?!

Comment by awhs — July 15, 2008 @ 1:01 pm

Hi, nice idea…just tried to donate 50$, but the paypal link does not work. Any of these SD cards still available ?

Thanks

Andre

Pingback by Ubuntu EEE auf SDHC Karte | Eee PC News — July 14, 2008 @ 3:45 am

Can you please clarify if Ubuntu Eee will support all the Eee PC variants? As you know, the 700 has a 7″ screen, the 900 has a 8.9″ screen, the 901 has the same screen as the 900, but a different wireless card etc…

Hardware isn’t the same on all the Eee PCs, so is Ubuntu Eee targeting only the first generation of Eee PCs, or will it cover the 2nd and 3rd generations as well?

manny, thanks!
Urban Strata, thank you. People have said that class 6 SD cards give the same feel as the SSD when it comes to speed. So that’s what we’ve gone for. When it comes to out-of-the-box support, we’re focusing on full support of the 701 and 900 versions before we’re move on to the 901 and 1000 versions.

Comment by Jon Ramvi — July 13, 2008 @ 11:19 pm

First of all, GREAT job on Ubuntu Eee. I’ve been using it on my 701 4G for a couple weeks and love it — just waiting for true webcam support. ;-)

The SD card idea is great. Just wondering:

1. How will access speeds compare between running the OS on SD as opposed to the SSD?

2. Will Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 support the new 901 and 1000(H) out of the box?

Thanks!

Anonym, sorry, but it isn’t done yet. You don’t have to donate anything to get it when it’s out. But IF you donate, you get one of these cards when you donate more than 50$. That’s the idea :)

Jeni, can’t be more illegal to put it on a sd card than making it available for download?

Comment by Jon Ramvi — July 12, 2008 @ 6:02 pm

I’m a bit concerned about the Intellectual Property issues involved here. How much Windows Media Player code does Ubuntu Linux use?

Comment by Jeni — July 12, 2008 @ 5:54 pm

ok… but where is the download for 8.04.1 ??

Comment by Anonym — July 12, 2008 @ 4:06 pm

Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 will be as free as any other linux distributions. This is just an alternative to downloading it and putting it on a stick yourself where you get to donate to the project

Comment by Jon Ramvi — July 12, 2008 @ 3:08 pm

Quote: “to support an open source project which does everything it can to give back to it’s users”

why just let all the people download the super “Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 harder, better, faster, stronger” instead of making them pay for it ?

sorry for this post, but it’s the truth!!
