My preferred are (not ordered)

I'm casting my vote for «Walkabout». I had a couple of suggestions myself, but «Walkabout» says nothing about Ubuntu, (never liked the name Ubuntu EEE, but loved the software) and it says all about the machines it's designed for.

I notice that the Canonical letter says that a name like Ubuntu for eee or Ubuntu-eee remix would be fine with them. Why not go with one of those names, then? Or, perhaps, the name JellyKing suggests--Ubuntu rEeemix?

Ion is an 'unregistered" trademark? What the heck does that mean? If it's unregistered, doesn't that mean it's useable?

Or, perhaps Eeeon ?

Will you be taking Canonical up on its offer for help with a new logo?

I do hope, too, that future versions of your os will base themselves on the new versions of Ubuntu. I have Ubuntu on my desktop, and I like having it on my eee pc too.

Today I've got my NB 100 running Ubuntu 8.04 EEE, and I am disappointed. I am not able to install Ubuntu 8.04 without using the recovery cd and an external dvd-ROM. Gparted is not able to discover the harddisk. It seems to be locked, so that you can only use the Recocery CD. No games with new distributions possible.

- uree (Ubuntu Remix Edition Eee, ureeeeey)
- unre (Ubuntu Netbook Remix Eee, could also be considered an UNREal dream)

hi there,

jon, i really thank you for finally bringing Ubuntu to my EEE PC in an easy and non time intensive way. from spotting your project to a running system it took me a couple of hours - after a week of usage, i simply love it! ;)

to answer your question, in my opinion it is more important to have a stable basis with complete hardware support and a minimum amount of bugs. therefore i'd prefer if you just bugfix the hardy heron (a LTS!) until it is a "perfect" system on any EEE PC and then consider upgrading to ibex/jaunty/jaunty+1/etc... just for the competition.

keep up the excellent work,
flo

p.s.: like already said before, on of my top "feature requests" would be a shorter boot time (<60sec to idle desktop)

motile
motile OS
motile linux

motile the adjective means: exhibiting or capable of movement.
The very nature of a netbook. In another sense highlights the new objective of moving to more hardware platforms.

motile the noun means: a person whose prevailing mental imagery takes the form of inner feelings of action.
Not a snappy as "from freedom came elegance" but something that makes the name sound deep and meaningful :-)

I don't have any idea what the logo might look like.

Thanks for the work, this is nice on the 701. OpenOffice 3 would be sweet, I tried the regular Ubuntu ppa they released for Intrepid, but Ubuntu eee would have none of it.
If possible, also including the snd-hda-intel file for 701 users of Skype. The fix is easy enough, but this would be nice integrated.

I think the current os size is fine. I plopped in 2gb ram, so didn't create a swap on install and I still had enough room to add plenty applications and games. Maybe another suggestion, if possible, would be to have the partitioner select "Ext 2" as the default for the install process.

And maybe leave a space at the top toolbar so we can more easily select toolbar properties (like autohide and such). It took me a while to figure this out for nbr. Having Add/Remove as default would be nice too, I got spoiled on that and cried my way through Synaptic before figuring out where Add/Remove was hiding.

I changed my desktop background to black so the nbr screen didn't look so hokey. I mean, it looked beautiful regardless, I just didn't like seeing the regular desktop behind the nbr screen.

Again though, great job! The tweaks I've had to do for my eee are way less and a lot easier than putting Ubuntu on my Aspire One. The website has a nice polish to it too.

Please please please cut the OS back a bit more!

No CUPS, no manufacturer-specific printer drivers, bare minimum of logging by default, no braille, bare minimum of extra libraries, don't double-up on applications purely to provide extra choice.

Less is more on resource-constrained hardware!

Mercury

Roman God of Speed and Zeus's messenger, which seems to fit the nature of the netbook. The name obviously can't be a pun on EEE simply because the OS is being extended to include more than just the EEE PC (and imho its just in poor taste).

It'd also make for a cool default metallic theme.

Toshiba are partnered with Canonical and are using Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Hardy LTS) on their devices.

P.S. Having a link to the UNR project (https://launchpad.net/unr) on your wiki would be cool :-)

P.P.S I am the main developer of Netbook Remix

Hi,

I'm writing here because I'm a new EEE-PC user and recently gived a try @ ubuntu-eee - problem is, webcam and sound doesn't work "out of the box" when installing ubuntu-eee on my 701SD, and after couple of days trying to figure how to make it work I finally quit and reverted back to xandros... this situation kinda sucks. So I decided to write a comment here, hopefully this issue would be solved within the upcoming 8.10-eee release... Please dev team, hear my call, there' still 701 users who would like their hardware supported.

Thanks for your time reading. I hope I'll be able to finally use ubuntu on my eee real soon! :)

As the Tech Coordinator for a school district I can see a few small things that if added would be a huge deal for school districts. First, it would be nice to have just a few edu and game packages included by default. The Eee Pc distro and Linpus lite include these by default. Second, a management app maybe based on sabayon so the settings can be locked. Lastly, an imaging app that allows admins to set up a netbook exactly as they want, then build an installable image that anyone can install. I'm talking installer that's almost fully automatic with maybe a couple key presses. This way flash drives or SD cards can be distributed and installed by admins, teachers, or students themselves.

I think netbook remix is off to a fantastic start, just maybe it could be made a little bit more friendly for the education environment. With some tweaks I could see schools all over the nation wanting to adopt this platform for 1 to 1 setups.

Hi Jon,

I was thinking along the lines of NoteBook Linux (NBL) which kind of extends itself into Nibble and a nibble being smaller than a byte seemed appropriate.

Good luck with your search.

I'm still confused as to why it "needs" to be rebranded so heavily.
At heart I'm an Ubuntu user, and out of choice I would use Ubuntu over any other OS in pretty much any situation. If this distro cuts it's association with Ubuntu (despite largely being the result of the work of those involved with the Ubuntu project as a whole), I'd be inclined to remove it from my system and replace it with something more honest.
At least the name "Ubuntu for eee" (or something similar, within Canonical's requirements) gives credit to the many good people who worked long and hard to make Ubuntu the outstanding OS that it is.

Oh, and Ubuntu.NET?! Why not go the whole way and call it "Microsoft Ubuntu", "McUbuntu" or "iUbuntu" and really see how many trademark laws we can violate...!

100% hardware support, above everything else, for every eee model - particularly for the 1000 ;)

Second: release as soon as possible.

Third: fast boot

Fourth: Drop excess software and let people install what they want.

it should include all the tweaks which were necessary to do after ubuntueee 8.04.1 (tmpfs,FF settings, screensaver passwd, apt-sources, ...) which makes it easier for the user. Maybe there should be a NBR Version and also a Gnome Version (or XFCE). I would choose Gnome instead of NBR. Hmmm, hardwarebutton support would also be nice (eee-control or similar).

I'd love to see some sort of "skin" capability for the remix interface - like the system used for windowmaker, etc.

This might be a great name for a great OS?

OSiris
- it was a greek god

or:

gOSiris
- gO as in mobility, (on the go), and Osiris as in god which would make the computer a mobil god... ;)

Thanks for a great OS!!

Drivers work great on h1000, except of hibernate and the buttons on top of the keyboard. I was so surprised, how well everything went, that I even donated some money ;)

My wishlist for Ibex:
- fastest possible boottime is very important for a netbook
- walkman mode
- normal desktop switch
- tabs for nautilus
- working hibernate

Looking forward to the release, you made this netbook perfect.

I vote Ubuntu Eee Remix, not far off from what identification you started with, easily recognizable as the same to people who are already familiar with the project, and fits what Ubuntu will accept.

Don't know if this is related, but my update manager tonight wants to uninstall eee-osd and ubuntu-eee (I didn't let it). Is this the new update for Ubuntu-eee or Canonical getting tetchy?

Yep, I'll second Lu's idea, the 1st and top priority in my own opinion is to get hardware 100% functional.
Then, I think jon's proposals are good: netbook remix changer, faster boot, stability ... And btw, thanks a lot for your work jon :)

Having tried a number of other, eee customised distros, this looks the most promising yet. Would be nice to get some of the wrinkles ironed out, such as volume control working from keys, and minmising ssd writes as part of install. Can't wait for next release!

Great distro, but hardware support has to be the biggest seller and getting volume, brightness and wifi to behave. Also battery life is a concern. In software terms as long as the basics are covered such as browser, office, audio, video, image editing, IM then users can add packages as they wish. Keep it lean and mean!

Hi Jon,
How about "electron"?
Inspired by your Ion idea, but smaller.

Of course, you could also use "eelectron" or eeelectron but that ends up having four eeees.

I suppose you have to sort out the rebranding before you can issue version 8.10? Good luck with that, you've really changed the way I use my computer; it's so superior to the Xandros distro from Asus. Thank you,
Jon

Jon:

Great work with Ubuntu Eee...

By the way, I've been trying to run it with VMWare on a Vista host, but I can't get past Busybox. I even tried some tips for changing the bios.bin, but that didn't work either (http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=3394)

It'd be great to know what I'm doing wrong with it. Any tips? Or know where there's a tutorial?

Nomad? You have got to be kidding! There's this MP3 player, you know.. trademark issues and all that.

I really can't see what's wrong with Ion. Who exactly complained, and what exactly are they using this unregistered trademark on?

A few possibilities..

you could focus on the fact that it is a linux distro and just come up with a cool sounding original brand, something like...
GLOSS (GNU/Linux Operating System and Software).. truthfully Im surprised noone has used this acronym yet

you could try to focus on the idea of being for smaller netbooks and go with a name like...
InDecks (a play on words, deck being slang word for netbooks and an index being where you go first when you open a book)

If you are interested in creating alot of website hits I suggest a name like...
FREEPORN OS (the logo could be fun to design too)

and if you want the name to imply how simple and to the point your distro works then I personally like the name...

please seriously consider my naming recommendation of Nomad. i think its reflect both the netbooks smallness and mobility and you can squeeze in some of your Norwegian heritage too. anyhoo. it would be nice if it was put on a list for consideration somehwere. but hey if no one likes it... thats cool too i guess.

Nomad ([NomadOS, Nomadix] since you move around alot with a netbook. the logo could be a penguin, bear or reindeer dressed as a Norwegian Sami).
or...

Duodji (Again that nomadic Norwegian Sami theme. also means usefulness, made for a purpose/function. [Duodjeee?])

Oh, by the way, anything with "EEE" in the name is far more likely to attract trademark trouble than "Ion," because it may imply endorsement from Asus. You certainly couldn't argue that the similarity between your product's name and theirs was coincidence.

An unregistered trademark? You have to be kidding. That shouldn't stop you.

Trademarks provide very limited protection, even if they're registered. Essentially, they stop people impersonating you. "Ion" is a common word and would be in use by thousands of businesses and products throughout the world (which is why you can't register it). NOBODY has exclusive rights to the word "ion," nor can they stop you from using it in unrelated ways.

I don't know who claimed otherwise, but you are completely entitled to issue a product named something like "Ion Linux," so long as it could not be reasonably construed as impersonating another company/product or confusing customers.

Some people/organizations will claim ownership of anything. I had a similar experience:

I suggest Synergy or Synergeee.
"Synergy is the term used to describe a situation where the final outcome of a system is greater than the sum of its parts."

I think that would be awesome for this distribution!

I'd love to see VLC and/or Songbird in as default media players.

Also to netbook-remix/normal desktop switch sounds like it is an essential include. Hope it made it in :)

well, First off, I'd like to thank all the very nice people for making this remix......over all the experience so far has been mostly positive, with just a few bugs...I had to run the install program three times before it seemed to be working properly...I did get one or two odd errors ("can't write system files to disk" was one )...once the OS was installed, onto a dual boot 1000ha that had xp on one partition already, everything worked except the wireless, which seemed to struggle to log on to my wireless router sitting four feet away...once connected, it did not work at all. I followed some of the suggestions on line and installed wicd and removed network manager, and now everything seems to work just great......maybe not quite as responsive as I'd like, but no slouch either..looking forward to working with it a lot!!!

Thanx again...

I'd like to see VLC become the default media player of totem (i believe), because it has the codec support out of the box and cpu usage is a ton better (I can watch a movie while prefetching a youtube video in VLC, not in the default video player. Keeps down on the install on the little 4GB OS drive (eee 901 linux).

There is already a project www.eeebuntu.org
But maybe both projects might be combined to a single project named "eeebuntu" ?
Otherwise, how about "triple E"?

Hey there,
I love Ubuntu Eee but i have a problem that I cant solve, I spent like 9 hours today trying to figure out what to do, but the Grub thing is confusing me.
So I installed ubuntu on hd1(16gb). hd0 (4gb) is Windows XP. It works fine, even the Dual-Boot Screen, but after I used Windows XP again for the first time after installing ubuntu it won't work after the next restart. The Asus Bios Screen comes up, then a black scree, followed by the Asus Bio Screen again, black screen, asus screen, period. I dont know what else to do. Nobody replies to my posts in different forums, maybe its just a really dumb mistake and people think that I could figure it out by myself, but I cant.

Thank You

Lingo-piracy is not an entirely new problem, even in the United States. Ralph Lauren has a trademark in the word “polo” (over the objections of the U.S. Polo Association), and Congress has given the U.S. Olympic Committee exclusive control over the word “Olympics.” This has resulted in a ban on the phrase “Gay Olympics” but permission for the “Special Olympics.” No word yet on whether the Olympic Diners in countless cities will have to change their names, although a high-priced lawyer could argue that diners using the word is “diluting” the brand image of the Olympic Games just as the Village Voice once went after newspapers like the Cape Cod Voice and Bloomington Voice.

Surely if it is shipping with a 'buntu version, it's going to be the latest 8.10 release which includes a special netbook version?

Runs on eee900 straight from the install, not custom kernel required.

Ubuntu eee should include some sort of utility that include the download # or "Cloud" of various programs to help direct newbies to programs/games/utilities that more experience user find usable or interesting.

There's too many options in the generic Synaptic Manager such that it confuses folks about what is good, popular or not.

All operating systems, including yours should have custom drivers installed which for which I commend you. But Everyones looking for a 5 second boot time. Unfortunately I dont know linux code like I did Dos. And that probably goes for a lot of people trying your system. Of course Im doing it because its open source and theres a vested interest for all of us. But speed is what everyone strives for. Please keep that in mind. Im certainly no wiz, but the promise of flash drives and solid state drives was to quicken everything.

First, hats off to you! Second, I STRONGLY agree with what has already been stated by others: if this is the "Eee PC" version of Ubuntu (Canonical trademark, all rights reserved, yada, yada...) then it makes absolute sense to first focus on 100% total hardware compatibility (i.e. kernel customization). Most people would much rather figure out how to install software package "x" than trouble-shoot a piece of hardware to work that ideally should have worked OOTB.

Should've put it here instead of the other post.

"Ubuntu rEeeMix"

I'm also a fan of having Eee in the name.

ok my 2 cents.
Carbontube linux (yes it's long) but they are small it's not already taken and you could reuse the logo (tho making it look more like a carbon tube would be better). Regardsless of name change Great work on the distro, just my dvb-t and irda to make work and i'll be fully functional.
